Oh, are you struggling with learning anatomy? We created the ★ Ultimate Anatomy Study Guide ★ to help you kick some gluteus maximus in any topic. Completely free.

The gluteus maximus muscle is the largest and strongest of the gluteal muscles. It is the most superficial layer of the dorsal gluteal musculature and therefore forms the surface anatomy of the gluteal region.

The gluteus maximus has several origins on the pelvic bones as well as the sacrotuberous ligament and inserts at the gluteal tuberosity of the femur. The innervation is supplied by the inferior gluteal nerve.

The gluteus maximus muscle is the strongest extensor and outward rotator of the hip and is also involved in adduction and abduction as well as stabilization of the hip joint. With its insertion at the iliotibial tract it also contributes in relieving weight pressure of the femur via the tension band principle.

- 0:26 nerve supply by the inferior gluteal nerve
- 0:44 origins: sacrum, ilium, thoracolumbar fascia, sacrotub. lig.
- 1:02 insertion: gluteal tuberosity and iliotibial tract
- 1:20 functions: extension, outward rotation, adduction, abduction

Thanks so much Matt, I'm not a physiotherapist or medical guy of any kind but my lower back, hamstrings, hips, knees and IT band and shins have been bothering me lately and I had no idea what was causing it. Now you explained the physiology I can hopefully start to fix it

To explain clearly, animation is needed.

when you explain the action of muscles kindly add 3D animated videos to explain that ..further more show the attachments of muscles thoroughly, , but good effort, keep it up, , 👍👍

Sometimes I see that section of the green muscle you've depicted covering the great throchanter I suppose in emphasis of the bursa at that site; sometimes I see fascia and the section covering the greater throchanter is shown as fascia terminating the muscle in the iliotibial band. So my question is from a aesthetic interest really as I'm a fitness and wellness coach, does the gluteus maximus transform into tendons at the great trochanter or is it still muscle. The many anatomy books I've seen contradict each other. I just wanna know what muscle to train in a female to make the hip pop at the throchanteric region

You left me scratching my head. You need more pictures to explain that stuff, man.

You state that the origin of the gluteus maximus originates from the "ilium, behind the posterior gluteal line" however your highlighted image clearly shows an area between the posterior and medial gluteal line, which is the origin of the gluteus medius.

There are slight inaccuracies in most of the videos I've watched on Kenhub. Furthermore, anatomy is oversimplified. Not impressed.

You did not show the action of the muscle, by performing to it
