GB 5 5,4 c.cm. Model Diesel Engine

GB 5 (serial number 38).

Made in Australia as a joint project by David Owen and Gordon Burford. Gordon Burford is best known for his famous "Taipan" range of model diesel engines from the 50's through to the 70's.

It is a near replica of the "GB 1" of 1947, Gordon Burford's first "Sparey diesel" inspired model engine. Approximately 170 GB 5's were made in the early 2000's. They achieved ready acceptance by "Old Time" aircraft flyers. Today they are still sought after for large vintage work.

Porting is classic "piston-port induction" with one opposed transfer port, as made famous by the British "Mills" 1.3 and .75 diesels.

It starts and runs just like a large Mills.

A top drawer model engine in all respects. Finish, fits and handling are superb. A shorter "stubby" intake tube and needle valve assembly was offered as an optional accessory to permit fuel feed from a remote tank.

The engine has no sub piston induction. I believe it would throttle very well. I am tempted to make up my own intake to install a modern twin needle R/C throttle carburettor.

Propeller utilised: Tornado nylon 12 x 6

Maximum RPM with this propeller: 6,000 static.

Fuel Composition:

1. Castor Oil 25%

2. Di-ethyl Ether 33.5%

3. Kerosene 40%

4. 2- Ethyl Hexyl Nitrate 1.5%

Hi Peter

Just a coincidence on the initials. Tt was designed by Gordon Burford (of "Taipan" fame) in Australia in 1947. His first engines were branded "GB".

G'day Doonside!

You now have a very desirable stable mate for your Doonside Mills.

The GB 5's start and run just like a giant Mills. Lovely things. Don't under prop though!

12 x 6 minimum, a 13 x 6 is probably better.
