Excel Lambda and Let Function with Tom Hanks - Episode 2397

Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Using LAMBDA and LET functions in Excel.
Welcome to episode 2397 of the MrExcel Podcast, where we dive into the world of Excel and explore its latest features. In this episode, we will be discussing the LAMBDA and LET functions, which have been making waves in the Excel community. These functions allow you to return pictures from data types, making your spreadsheets more visually appealing and dynamic.
I was inspired to create this episode after reading about LAMBDA and LET in one of the Excel hash entries. These functions are relatively new to Excel and have been generating a lot of buzz. So, I decided to explore them further and share my findings with all of you. In this video, we will be using the example of Tom Hanks and his movies to demonstrate the power of LAMBDA and LET.
In the spreadsheet, I have set up two dropdowns where you can choose a movie from the Wolfram Alpha data types. These dropdowns are linked to a LAMBDA function called InBothCasts, which is where all the magic happens. Inside this function, we use the LET function to define two variables, Cast-One and Cast-Two, which contain a list of all the people in the chosen movies. We then use an XMATCH function to check if Tom Hanks is present in both lists. This is just one of the many things you can do with LAMBDA and LET.
But that's not all, we also use the FILTER function to extract a list of people who are in both casts. And here's where the real fun begins - we use the matching cast dot image and matching cast dot name to return the photos and names of these actors. This is a great way to add visual elements to your spreadsheet and make it more engaging. And if you're wondering what happens if a person doesn't have a photo on Wikipedia, don't worry, we have a solution for that too. We use the IFERROR function to display their name instead.
This is just one example of how you can use LAMBDA and LET in your spreadsheets. I have also included a link to the Excel file used in this video in the description below, so you can try it out for yourself. And if you want to learn more about Excel and its latest features, check out my new book, MrExcel 2021, Unmasking Excel. You can find the link in the top right-hand corner of this video.
