I don’t feel well. Chemo meds. Nights are a wash sometimes. Yet the clouds parts when I see a new JMG post. I rest.

It's crazy to me that we still have only sent one spacecraft that has done a mere flyby of the ice giants. We still really don't know much!

I love the fact that Neptune was discovered with math. I was dumbfounded when I first learned that!

New PhD. student here. I'm studying the atmosphere of the ice giants. Really interesting video, the science part is great ! Although i'd like to insist on the fact that we really don't know their internal composition. It's almost all suppositions. The fact of the matter is, we would need an in-situ mission to understand these worlds better. The scientific community is pushing for such a mission on Uranus, but it all depends on if NASA / ESA are actually willing to go for it. It's costly and takes a lot of time, so it's tough to justify this to people.

Sometime in 1990 my mom brought me to the West Chester Public Library, a beautiful converted mansion in West Chester, PA. I remember it being labyrinthian, but not intimidating... as long as you kept ascending, you'd find the kids area in the converted attic. Now, I am genetically a dude bro, so I immediately gravitated to the big book of Mike Schmidt, who had recently just retired but was still huge in Eastern PA kid circles. But that day Michael Jack was dwarved - I think it might've been a sly maneuver of a librarian sneaking a "learning book" into the "star" section... it was one of the first big photo kids books of the VOYAGER 2 grand tour, complete with Neptune and Uranus and countless moons. I will forever remember sitting in that silent attic by myself enraptured in that book, falling in love with space. I'd pay so much to find that book again. Your videos light a little of that nostalgic moment of wonder for me, each one, buy especially this one.

Hi John. The story of how the grand tour was worked out is worth an episode :-)

When I was a kid, in the late 60s, my dad got me a Rand McNally volume on space and the planets. The photos of these outer bodies were meager, just bright fuzzy dots. I don't think they even mentioned any moons. I'm glad we have such great images and information on them now, I want my son to be interested in space and science in general.

Thanks John, this is my favourite series you’ve done in a while, but I am looking forward to seeing more from the elements series you’ve started too.

“Boots on Mars” sounds like a 90’s grunge band

I also grew up in the 80s. My parents got me a subscription to this space magazine. I think it was called Odyssey. Anyway it kept me informed of the Voyagers’ progress, and I was so excited to be able to follow the exploration as it happened. It felt like a special time to be alive.

But I was disappointed Pluto couldn’t be included since it was out of position. So you can imagine my excitement as an adult when New Horizons launched. I felt like a kid again waiting for the furthest away Christmas ever.

This was another excellent video from you, John. Neptune is my most favourite planet of the Solar System, always and forevermore. My nickname for Neptune is 'the other blue planet'. As a Piscean, I am happy that Neptune is my ruling planet.

I remember watching the highlights of the neptune flyby at a science fair a few weeks after it happened. Was cool. Still remember thinking how cool it was.

Neptune is fascinating. My favorite fact about it is how it radiates off far more heat than it receives.
