I have seen travelers in Worcestershire for many years now there are always in Redditch roundabout at Christmas every year they never leave rubbish around and when I worked for Redditch council and I used to give them bags for there rubbish and it was always bagged up and the land was tidy the horses kept the grass down they don't cause any trouble it's other types of travellers in caravans who make the trouble and everybody else gets treated bad and it's a really a shame I always slow down and give room to anybody with horses

Well I’m from a Cumbrian farming background.

I am sorry to see people making it deliberately harder for the travelling people to stay on the roadsides or the verges.

The fair has gone on for centuries. It’s only for a short time each year.

It’s a tradition and part of north country culture.

Live and let live.

Well the clue is in the title there……it is PRIVATE LAND, weather there’s a lock on it or not, it’s Private. Try a novel approach & ask for permission before entering the land you can’t just demand to be given the right to go onto someone’s private land & blame the police then for not being happy. You are right not all travellers are bad & neither are all police.

This is like everything else in life....the few spoil it for the many. True travellers love and respect their animals and nature, without that they would not survive. On the other hand you have the lying, thieving animal bullies who are cruel, their horses work through fear, they are not real horsemen.

Pretty simple really, isn't it ? If it's private land, it doesn't belong to you, therefore you have no right to park on it. Would they like it if someone set up camp in their back garden ?

Lived in Appleby 25 years all my life, grew up there . up untill 4 years ago. Glad to be out of there. Some are nice, but there's minority that are there to cause nothing but trouble. They always leave a right mess and dont clean up after themselves. Some are also not respectful to the locals either. Its changed alot of the years, it's not like it used to be.

Going to Appleby next weekend, only Sunday due to commitments, I'm not a traveller but my wife's family were .
You get good and bad in all aspects of life, people need to let their traditions carry on .
Life is hard enough, peace to all and big love ❤️

Year ago, a group of Travellers in two caravans, and couple of pick up trucks canped for two weeks on some waste land 500 yards from my house. That week the lead flashing disappear off my porch. Two neighbours lost theres too. About £10 scrap value. Cost me £200 to replace it, and i had to redecocrate my hallway where rain poured in for days. Conincdence? I think not. Not good people, as many can testify.

Maybe they should carry a dinghy around with them and say iv just arrived by boat.... that way they will be treated like kings....

If Appleby horse fair has been going on for centuries, why is it such a problem now? Surely locals can put up with a bit of disruption for one week of the year. I lived on the Isle of Man for 2 TT's and the locals just accept 2 weeks disruption by bikers every year. Sure it costs to clean up afterwards, but it also brings in money.

Here's a wild idea, plan ahead! As a "community" they know they're going every year so contact farmers/landowners months/years in advance to arrange (pay for) somewhere to stay, where they can rest, feed & water horses etc, arrange for facilities to be in place like portaloos & bins/skips. Take responsibility for where they stay, look after where they stay, dont leave waste behind, stop playing the victim, just a thought

It wasn’t locked so we entered and used the field, if its not yours don’t use it! They just leave a mess everywhere they go. Caravans and transits, they could just go straight to Appleby but chose not to. Appleby done want them either.

Back in the 60s and 70s, I watched out of town with Jack Hargreaves. It showed all types of country living, travellers, crafts and shows. Never saw police or hassle of any kind but fast forward to today with freedoms and old traditional ways of life fading away. Everything is on the decline and that's without the shite that's happening world wide. Sad to see those travellers not only hassled by the police and authorities but to be pressured into giving up their ways of living. Good video despite not being able to continue on with the journey.

In County Durham, multiple ‘traveller friendly sites’, with facilities have been made available for travellers. This year, in Bishop Auckland, they’ve chosen to cut a hole in a metal fence onto a children’s play park, tear the grass up into huge ruts and leave all sorts of rubbish lying around. If they’ve got a bad reputation it’s their own doing. The sites for them to stop at are clearly marked and have been used for years…Who is paying for the damage and clean up of this park.

Folk should be allowed to walk the earth with equity and liberty which doesn't intrude upon other folk - Appleby Fair is not a good example of this. It's disruptive, intrusive and dispite the lush beauty of Romany culture there are too many bad actors who invite the policing and state intervention.

The problem is with "Private Land" how dare decent hard working people work hard and pay for land and not let "Free Loaders" illegally pull their vehicles and caravans etc etc on to it and leave piles of rubbish all over the place not to mention human shit in the bushes ?

I live near Appleby, and it’s an absolute nightmare every year, from racing horses and buggies down the high street, going thru temp traffic lights on red, and causing major disruption, not to mention the shanty towns set up on every grass verge, and the rubbish left behind for us to clean up, complete disregard for the communities they travel through. I’m sure there are many decent law abiding travellers, but in my experience most of them are not!
