I don't think he gave a shit whether it was a ball or a strike. He saw Gardner's reaction and saw an opportunity to fire up his team when they had bases loaded, no outs in a late tie game.
However, I just looked up the game and Gardner struck out and then Jeter hit into a double play the next AB and the Angels scored 3 in the bottom of the inning and won 4-1
