I always thought porridge was something smoother than oatmeal, like a cream of wheat or cornmeal porridge 😅
Did not realize oatmeal was a porridge!

In the UK, that’s minced beef, or just mince.
Mince pies are made with mincemeat. But mincemeat has no meat in it at all. It’s dried fruit and alcohol.

Oatmeal is a type of porridge. It’s a category of food, like how dumplings and noodles can mean hugely different things in different places. Porridge is any type of grain boiled or cooked in a pot to a mushy, liquidy texture. In the west we mostly think of breakfast porridge, including oatmeal, but also cream of wheat and farina are more popular in the US, which might be why we’re more specific. But porridge really just applies to the cooking method, which is why things like polenta, grits, and juk or congee are all different kinds of porridge.
