Cutting One’s Head in Seppuku | Musō Shinden Ryu: Juntō

順刀 Juntō

This is actually a very special Kata where you are not fighting someone. Kaishaku means to help, and it was the act of cutting the neck of a samurai who committed seppuku to relieve him from his pain. You draw the katana to the right with the blade sideways to avoid it from reflecting any light, which could give unnecessary fear to the samurai. You then stand up and hold the katana over your shoulder. The samurai picks the Tantō up and prepares for Seppuku.

You bring the tip down to purify the blade with water, and then you wipe the blood off. You must not chop the head off in Kaishaku, but it’s best that it’s barely connected to the body, or drops very close. You express this cut by moving the blade slightly after the swing. To learn how to perform these techniques, please join our online lessons.

Kaishaku was a pretty dubious honor, because if you did well no one would care but if you did poorly everyone would remember.

“They are even happy to turn their blades on themselves, to atone for wrongs”

Quote by first Europeans learning of the samurai.

A bit haunting. I said "No, Tsukada-san!" before I could stop myself, lol

A very precious part of history. (Both the Kata and Tsukada-san!)

At the last Seminar, Furuichi-Sensei told us to do this Kata extremly slow. Only the Cut is fast. As always Seki-Sensei does an realy good jo, but this would be to fast for my Sensei. Also it should be important to mention, that you are not allowed to show this Kata at an Enbu or Taikai at any means.

This is probably the only kata that’s ever truly moved me. It’s so haunting yet incredibly meaningful!

Wow so this is the actual cut for the second man when curing of the head of the first man commiting Seppuku. He's not supposed to cut it off completely but to leave it hanging. Shogo San so in other words the Seppuku deducted in Japanese movies is completely incorrect unless those executing the samurai wanted to dishonor them in death, they would cut off the head clean. Was that the case for every samurai or was that the case for the criminals?

This is usually a kata forbidden to be shown in public or demonstration outside of the dojo.

Life lived by the sword, an oxymoron perfected.

I was taught this kata isn't supposed to be posted on media, as its a... very controversial kata. Generally something you wouldn't film. It does look similar in some ways, to MJER 's version of this kata.

Reminds me of a certain Yukio Mishima.

Samurai would often practice their craft on innocent civilians, disgusting.

Question, why do they not fully cut off their heads? Would that not make the person commiting Seppuku go through more pain instead?

I have to learn/practice this kata. I would have wanted to be a kaishakunin back then.

I’m very sorry Shogo, but I’m not sure about the name of ryuha… ShiNden or Shiden? In videos one name, in the comments - another.
