The Drywall Doctor has gotten a few comments in response to some of his videos on prefilling drywall with hot mud (Durabond) and whether angles should ever need to be filled in as with seams and butt joints. Ray gives his take on how, because walls will always move apart from each other and never closer together, pre-filling inside corners won't make a difference in the end result either in the short or long term.

Using Roman’s pro-999 on any exposed powder / torn paper has been a game changer honestly. It’s leaves a tack that accommodate the Durabond perfectly. Pre-filling all gaps, then embedding mid-flex in inside corners with general purpose just works. The durabond, in my opinion, just leaves a more substantial foundation for tape. It isn’t about settling or expansion / contraction for me. It’s about having a solid foundation wherever gaps exist.

I may prefill angles just to reduce capillary action of tape (getting sucked in a gap of 3/8” or more) because when it gets coated it will take more mud, and more time to dry and i hate gouging out half dry mud

What do I do when a factory joint meets a butt joint on an inside corner?

Why do I prefill? 1: that's the way I was taught. 2: prefilling forces the mud out to the edges of the tape when you roll/wipe the corners rather than having it go into the gap 3: tape is not structural. My gut tells me it needs to be backed in order to be solid. 4: presentation. It looks better to the customer who sees the walls before they are taped. I prefill angles (over 3/16") with a grout bag which doesn't take much time at all.

All that being said, you know more than I do. I'm not a full time drywall finisher. If you don't think it's necessary I believe you.

I prefill using a tube and makes the taping so much easier. I use to not prefill corners and I would rip tape when glazing. I just found the process to go way smoother when I have a sharp corner to start with.

If you have extensive sentiment you have more problems then drywall compound cracking .

I believe the best answer is. Because durabond is in the pan and it hardens fast. Why go get topping and wait for if to dry. When. I have dura bond in pan either way it will wrinkle

Should you prefill the corner that the wall and ceiling meet?

get a lot of shrinkage here in scotland in the frosty winters, mainly ceiling angles where theres a lot of movement and it wrinkles the tape and thats in tradional build not kit.

Hey drywall doctor two questions for you. Can you prefill and tape at same time with durabond and can you finish on to cement board ( hardibacker or durarock) with durabond and easy sand 45?

I pre-fill all my angles. I fell in love with Fibafuse but the one drawback is that if there is a gap behind it in an angle, it is very easy to cut through the tape. With the exception of using a banjo all my taping is by hand.

Do you have a video on curved walls, especially a tight radius.

Hey doc, how bad does a corner crack have to be before you totally retape? I was shown to just dig it out a wee bit a put some mud on my finger and run it down the crack? Thanks for the videos!

I don't know anything about construction. The more home repairs I do, the more that proves true.
I thought filling the gaps, either corners or seams helped with fire proofing?

What if the pieces are stood up? Would you still prefill?? Any of it?

I saw your technique when you have big gaps in the corners. You use two layers of paper tape. I will do the same

I prefill big gaps in angles just to make a complete area to be solid.
I pull my tape through a tape machine and wet tape, and wipe by hand, I find it stops my knife from pushing into the gap. This way I get a nice square corner.
If I used the Bazooka I probably wouldn’t bother filling medium size gap’s.
I just coat by hand.
Thanks for all you videos 👍
