Your recommendation of painting the boards as you go is spot on. It helps in two ways, one you are assured of complete coverage and two you don't have to load your brush so heavy that you end up will places in the gaps that are filled in with paint.

So after watching your vid, I shiplapped the wall over my fireplace today and it came out amazing! The nickel spacing was perfect! I wanted 4” boards and HD wouldn’t cut them that narrow for me, so had to do that myself, but no biggie! Fun project. Thank you so much!
