Millipedes are odd looking invertebrates that may seem creepy, but how much do you really know about these shy and gentle arthropods? In today's episode of The Wild Report, we get up close and personal with an American giant millipede to answer questions like how many legs they have, whether or not they are poisonous, and why they are important to the ecosystem!

If you've made it this far in the description, remember to be safe when creature adventuring! Most wild animals can cause injury if harassed, and I do not recommend attempting to capture any creatures without purpose and practice. The reason that I interact with wildlife is to produce these educational videos, and I have years of zoology experience under my belt. Also, I always ask permission from a land owner before exploring on their property, and you should do the same.

Keep adventuring everywhere, and keep your adventures safe at all times!

I really enjoy your content. It reminds me of being 7yrs old in rural Michigan. There was always lots of wildlife to explore. Snakes, birds, insects, frogs and mud puppies, rodents, turtles, and everything else under the sun.

If you've never let one of these little guys crawl up your arm while on a hike in the Appalachians, you're missing out on a core east coast experience IMO. Very pretty creatures if you ask me.

I'm disappointed too, "they're" always messing with the taxonomy of animals, "they" need to change that common name to "couple of hundred". Just a thought. Some interesting facts in this one, wasn't aware of the deer poop being on the menu. I usually find my milli's after shining cuts in WTX for 8 hours and see one thinking it's a snake. Great edit.

I love American giant millipedes, there have been several nights of herping that I can remember where the only noteworthy noodle-shaped thing I flipped was a good-sized Narceus, but I will never complain about a find like that. I didn’t know they have benzoquinone in their secretion, that’s very interesting and as always I can count on you to teach me new things. Something exciting that I learned recently, there is actually now a known millipede species with over 1000 legs! Eumillipes persephone, a fossorial millipede from Australia, has between 1000 and 1300 legs, so they actually earn the title ‘millipede’. Great stuff Ben!

I’m a Raleigh, NC native. I love seeing all of the species local to that area. It makes me miss being out in the woods. Also, keep up the awesome work on these videos. The content is always captivating, and I learn a ton! 👏

To be honest, between centipedes and millipedes, I would rather stick with centipedes. Because millipedes are not only toxic but also smells really bad. Millipedes emitting poisonous and disagreeable-smelling fluids from their glands. When millipedes feel in any way bothered or apprehensive, they typically react by giving off these smells. It's common for them to release the odor when people touch them. Centipedes may be venomous but at least its venom is not deadly to human. I myself have been bitten by centipedes several times and nothing happened.

I didn’t know we had giant millipedes in the states. I’ve worked with the African ones before in the pet trade. So interesting fact, while looking at one I noticed fast mites moving all around the stomach and in between the legs. I was stumped, like how do you treat a bug for bugs? 🤣 Talked to the manager who taught me that they need them, like a cleaner relationship.
