Villainous Rings & Pendants of DOOM Available here:

I’ve been meaning to make this video since November of 2020 when I first mentioned the idea in my MF DOOM Discography timeline video. I’m glad I waited as I not only got to talk about some of our favorite DOOM songs but at the same time got to recommend some beginner-friendly DOOM tracks for any newcomer! A win-win for everyone.

This is perfect timing since I was gonna introduce my 70 year old teacher to MFDOOM but not sure where to start

DOOM was one of those rare artists who transcends their art form. He had a mastery of the English language that is usually reserved for literature. His lyrics are not only fun and unique, but incredibly dense with meaning.

One beer was the first MFDOOM song I had ever heard. When I heard that instrumental my whole world lit up. I can listen to that song for hours on end, and it makes me feel like I’m a kid again during a late night falling asleep while AdultSwim is on my box tv.

I appreciate fans of dooms music being so open to newcomers, not only avoiding gatekeeping but actively encouraging and giving advice and recommendations. I heard coffin nails and knew I had to look deeper. As someone only just getting into his music, I appreciate everyone being so insanely chill!!

I feel like One Beer is a great intriductory song because it really brings all the eccentricities of Doom to the table, the intro plus the soulful vocals combined with the lyricism of desperation can really hit sometimes

personally i think fancy clown has to be hands down the most accessible. the sample is iconic, it’s simple to follow and if you comeback to the song after listening to projects like viktor vaugn, doomsday, or the rest of madvilliany, there is a whole side plot to understand with DOOM taking Viktors girl and that sets up so much more of his discog. i would also recommend can i watch because it was one of the first DOOM songs i listened to and i instantly loved it. think a vintage “Wet Dreamz” by jcole. it also helps build Viktors character which is super sick once you listen to gehdorah. Lastly, i highly recommend this because this is partially super underground, listen to monsta island czars, Escape From Monsta Island, end the self titled album from King ghidra. the two albums intertwine in stories and it’s filled with DOOM features. the songs that don’t have DOOM on them are also still heavily DOOM inspired so it’s a great listen

My first introduction to DOOM was November Has Come by the Gorillaz and it remains one my favourites to this day. It's more accessible with the inclusion of a chorus, and a beat that is less busy than what DOOM typically works with.

It's really cool how you perpetuate DOOM's legacy by analyzing his work and researching his influence

I've been listening to DOOM for 5 years now and I keep making new connections in the lyrics. That takes skill I cant even comprehend. RIP MF DOOM

Vaudeville Villain has always been my favourite by far. Surprised that album doesn't get more love. I absolutely love the tone of the album and the beats and the rhymes.

One song missing that I’d like to recommend to listeners is Gazillion Ear: I’ve shown that song to my friends that never had listened to DOOM before, and they fuck with it. Gazillion Ear is amazing with the beat switch of J Dilla production

The first DOOM song I ever listened to was Meat Grinder, and while I wouldn’t call it accessible by any means, it did get me to look up more of his music. I was like “This is completely insane. I didn’t know music could be like this! I need to see what else this madman has done!”

I discovered DOOM through November Has Come. If whoever you're introducing DOOM to is familiar with Gorillaz, I think it's a no-brainer. Send them to listen to all of Madvillainy after that.

Top 3 for me are One Beer, Accordion, and Fancy Clown. One Beer is just such a good story. You can follow the story with a visual in your head and the Huit Octobre sample is gorgeous. Accordion has a beautiful and unique track especially when the French horns start playing. Plus the rhymes in it are buttery smooth. And Fancy Clown has some of my favorite lyrics. It’s a lot more relatable if you’ve been in a bad relationship or cheated on which definitely sucks but man it just invokes such a strong feeling in you.

My first introduction to hip hop was MF DOOM, specifically his album Mm..Food. It was around 2009 or so on a late night and I was with my moms ex cruising around and he popped in the CD and I fell in love. And still after so many years I am still bumping his music and it hits just as hard as it did when I first heard him. But now that I am older I have more of an understanding of the lyrics than I did back then. MF DOOM had a big impact on me and inspired me to make music and I finally have a chance to do so now. It broke my heart when I heard he had passed. He is truly one of the GOATs.. RIP to the Illest Villain MF DOOM 🙏

I never get why Danger Mouse (Mouse and Mask) didn't get more love. I feel like this is the ideal introduction to MF Doom. The production breaks up the denseness in the lyrics so less goes over a new listener's ear.

JJ DOOM isnt as praised like the other albums but he spits facts on that album

My first DOOM song was “?“ off of Operation Doomsday. I was instantly hooked, and 7 years later and he is still my favorite artist. Madvillian and Mm Food are definitely the best albums to get newcomers into DOOM. Showing songs from two different DOOM projects also gives you an opportunity to explain the fact his discography is split up by different aliases.

I heard his name for years but wasnt into discovering new artists for a long time. After I heard his passing I decided to listen Operation Doomsday. It was one of those rare occasions for me as I finished listening the whole thing I ran it back and listened through it again immediately. Probably Im part of the "problem", for me finding new artists is like going out of my comfort zone so I usually stick to what I know and miss out on amazing artists :/
