It is a much-debated question if Buddhism is Hindu or not. Some people juxtapose Buddhism and Hinduism. Dr. Elst, on the other hand, says that Buddhism was a ‘sampradaya’ of Hinduism and that the Buddha never talked of himself as anything but a Hindu (at a time when even the word ‘Hindu’ was not yet in use.) In this talk, he examines various aspects of the Buddha and Buddhism, like caste, practices, beliefs, concepts, and rituals among others, drawing out conspicuously common roots between Buddhism and Hinduism.

About the Speaker:

A Belgian Indologist and one of the few Westerners to actively defend Hinduism, Dr. Koenraad Elst (°Leuven 1959) distinguished himself early on as eager to learn and to dissent. After a few hippie years, he did his Masters in Indology, Sinology, and Philosophy, followed by original fieldwork in BHU and Doctorate on Hindu nationalism.
He has published numerous books and innumerable articles and has earned both laurels and ostracism with his findings on hot items like Islam, multiculturalism and the secular state, the roots of Indo-European, the Ayodhya temple, Mahatma Gandhi's legacy, the dark side of Buddhism, reinvention of Hinduism, Maoism, direct democracy, defense of threatened freedoms, and the Belgian question.

Thank you, I was pretty much desperate to see many Hindu calling for fight against racism against Hinduism. This goes nowhere because westerners know they don't behave with racism when blaming casts system. Even if I love and respect many religions, but practice mostly Hindu rites, rituals and bhakti, I do reject casts. My interpretation is that casts are indeed an horrible practice, not because of the origin of casts that at the beginning are a very correct system of advices for each person to follow he's own spiritual needs to improve. One person with a Brahmin character, may have good results by following the fastest practices to seek realisation, these person may get accomplished by following the very direct practice of jnana-marga, or bhakti-marga. The other characters should follow the easier paths, as the strait paths are really hard to grasp. While the lower spiritually inclined characters, may not reach anything even by yoga-marga. These people may reach realisation, that's not the problem, but they need to adapt to their abilities, and make their own work their sadhana. Once you consider casts like this, it's nothing unbearable that would proclaim superiority of individuals upon others, but at the opposite, points those able to renounce fully their idea of any superiority at all and thus able to go direct on the path, and those who can't, giving everyone it's bets practices. Those who don't understand how it's possible that cast system explained here does NOT proclaim superiority of Brahmin, just prove they are not qualified to be Brahmin. Once you've understood cast system of old time this way, you just understand easily that today casts are stupid, as one is not capable because of the casts of his parents, but because of his own merits and subtlety. So the cast system is broken, it has been broken since Krishna times who obviously claims that a Kshatrya was given initiation from the Sun itself... So yes today cast system is absolutely unfair, but in addition, it's spiritually very stupid. And indeed it's a real concern that Hindus, despite their old wisdom, are just not able to get rid of it. It's not worse than mistakes done by westerners, I mean I'm not proclaiming inferiority of Hinduism. But following blindly a meaning-broken old superstition has always been stupid, and always will be, not depending if you're Hindu or Christian or Whatever. Stupid superstition, will always be stupid. And when it causes bad treatments to innocent people, it's worse. I have travelled in India, and touched many allegedly "untouchable" people and I consider some of them touch was a huge blessing, while some Brahmin I avoided carefully. And I saw stupid school teachers trying to get rid of the blessed "untouchable" ones, and try to get the respect from the untouchable "Brahmin" ones.

Now you talk a lot about Islam. Problem is : Islam is a great religion, but leaded by hugely immature or miscreants people nowadays. It has not always been so, but it's so now. Not all Muslim are immature or infidels. But most of all those taking the public lead mostly are. And that's a problem, because in the very precise process of reforms of religion, Islam is indeed the right one for modern times. Not to be imposed to all, but as the best for most people. Because Islam really is about pragmatic action in the world and the very very difficult task of discriminating the good and the bad in modern times. If it were well used, Islam would be the religion we need for modern people. Unfortunately, Muslims too do follow stupid superstitions instead of having a real effort made to understand what should be and above all, doing what should be done (the Jihad, that is getting rid of the miscreants, infidels, unbelievers, as stated by the miscreant being all those who instead of really believing in God, just make use of God, all those I talk about here, those who just practice old stupid superstition, like most Muslims do these days). They pretty much know they are on a bad road, it's a reform of the old religion, it should be obvious for them that religion is ADAPTABLE, that after a thousand years, it's no more the question of eating pork, nor the problem of hiding hairs, or the whole body, nor is it useful to get oneself explode in the middle of people of other religions. Successful religions are religions followed all heartedly with love, not hatred, war and violence...

Fortunately there are a long tradition of reforming Hinduism, that's why in the middle of people who are blind enough to keep using casts to reject some people based on their birth, there are some expert people teaching real wisdom and correct practices. It's said that the truth come from the voice of the Guru. The scriptures themselves say that's the truth is in the word said by the Guru, above even scriptures themselves. Only a few people are clever enough and is given a hearth good enough to get the point and follow the Guru. But they make the success of Hinduism. If Hinduism was only about planetary pujas and old scriptures, it would be dead now. Not because planetary pujas are bad, they are excellent and Vedic astrology is breathtaking. if rightfully made. But because without the lead of the Guru there would only be people using all these as old superstition and not as a base for spiritual change. But in India some Muslims have the same wise behaviour.

Islam mean > submission < to God
