A photo of Turkish opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu standing on a prayer rug with his shoes on after attending an iftar dinner hosted by an opposition alliance party on Friday sparked a controversy in the country.

Prayer rugs are used by Muslims as a clean space for prostrating and sitting on the ground during prayer, and stepping on them with shoes is frowned upon.

Kilicdaroglu apologised for the photo the next day, saying he “had not seen the prayer rug”. He accused the ruling party of creating an “operation” against him over the photo and finished his apology saying that he “sought refuge with sincere Muslims” from the allegations.
