Turkey’s Table of Six announces Kemal Kilicdaroglu as presidential candidate

Turkey’s Table of Six, a coalition of opposition parties, announced on Monday that Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu will be their presidential candidate for the elections on 14 May this year.

The announcement came after the leader of the second biggest party in the coalition, Meral Aksener, stepped back on Friday in disagreement over Kilicdaroglu’s candidacy before being convinced to rejoin the coalition and back the CHP leader’s bid in the presidential race.

Kilicdaroglu’s main rival will be Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s president since 2014, who is aiming to get elected for a second five-year term under Turkey’s new presidential system, which was introduced following a referendum in 2017.
