How to Install a Combination Switch and Receptacle

You can also wire the device the other way around - line to brass screw, neutral to silver screw, and leave the jumper in place. Doing this will cause the switch to control the receptacle, which has potentially interesting use cases.

I have to echo others and say that this was a very helpful video. This was the first time that I replaced a combination switch and receptacle. I was replacing an incredibly old switch that was not clearly marked as newer switches are. Easy to follow and understand. Helped me to identify the wires and how to install the new switch. Thanks for posting this. I was working with a replacement combo switch and outlet where none of the screw heads were obviously colored for easy ID. The combo that I removed was from the 70's, and had a totally different layout than my modern unit.

Like always a superb teaching video. I am 77 Vietnam veteran and I have a problem with a fan with lights which is supposed to be turned on by a 3-way switch. I bought it 10 years ago for 800 dollars and I have been unable to use it. Every time I hired an electrician, he charges me money but does not fix my problem. If you want the outlet to be controlled by the switch, you connect the incoming line to the brass terminal.
