I've been playing at open mics for about 8 years or so, and I really enjoy it! Mostly at the university nearby. Playing for college students really helped me improve my playing, as the challenge of it forced me to improve, whereas just playing at home doesn't have that same urgency. It's the challenge of performing in front of an audience that gets my adrenaline pumping, and makes it fun, for me. It's not about recognition or ego. I entertain myself as well as others, and that's what is rewarding. I do mostly covers of oldies, guitar and vocals, but I have a couple of my own songs that I do, as well. I encourage people to try it- it's not so scary once you feel confident in your abilities, enough to go up there. Since Covid started, I haven't played, but I'm hoping to get back into it.

Good tips, Caroline .. As someone who writes their own songs too and still harbours the desire to perform them to people, Open Mic nights are something I would eventually like to attempt .. I particularly agree with your observation that most other people don't really care, in the sense that they aren't focused on every little detail about you, as you imagine them to be .. I need to remember that ! .. Thanks, Wayne

Why do people edit like this nowadays? Please just let the speech flow naturally it’s so jarring I can barely listen to this

One issue I have never heard addressed is how many (most?) hosts only let their friends perform, and exclude anyone else they don't already know. On the one occasion I expressed displeasure with this, I was told I was "difficult to work with" and immediately banned from the venue. What's going on?
