If you’ve ever tried to do what software engineers do, it’s clear engineering principles are fundamental to the task. They’ve earned it.

I don’t care what are they calling me, I just keep crafting the best software I can, the title doesn’t matter

Engineers are the people who build things from scratch (not that scratch) and software engineers are one of them. Yes you can become a software engineer without a degree but that just shows how well oiled the industry is.

They acknowledge that software engineering is legitimate, but their claim is that engineering requires certification. The problem is that I'm a software "engineer" by title, yet I don't even have a CS degree! For the traditional disciplines (electrical, mechanical, etc.), to be called an "engineer" often means that you are either licensed or working under someone who is licensed.

Surely it depends on your definition of engineer, just arguing about semantics at this point

I think that it depends.
If you've a MSc degree in "Computer Science and Engineering" you should be called software engineer.
If you don't have that degree... Sorry but according to me, you're just a fancy software developer.

I'm a French Canadian in Québec, here we have two degree given in university: software engineering and computer science. Software engineer has a lot more math involved and you gotta pay in order to have your engineer licence the other required nothing. Both can apply for similar job, but software engineers might have tiny bit more advantages on certain job offer.

Soooo you can be a software engineer in Canada, you just need to have graduated from an accredited course and gone through the process to join the professional order in each respective province. The title is legally protected and framed in a spirit of responsibility to the public. E.G. A civil engineer is held to high standards of practice including documentation, acting within one's expertise, honesty, professionalism etc. Same for a mechanical or software engineer.

It's an issue for any one who uses the title "engineer" who's working in Canada not registered with the professional order, not just in software.

It's totally fine to use "engineering developper/software engineering specialist or names of the sort. Just the title" Engineer" is protected.

Sure software engineers aren't ENGINEERS, but we will listen to an organization that lumps engineers with geoscientists

The official certificate of my degree says engineering on it so im a software engineer

Agree wholeheartedly. The entire industry of software creation is juvenile compared to what it takes to be a real engineer. The sloppiness of what gets built and yet gets to affect everyone's lives would never pass as actual Engineering.

As a Software Engineer, I went through school and went through ton of training to reach where I am at today, took well beyond 4 years. I would like to keep my "Engineer" title especially when I'm completely aware of the impact I have done for the company.
