Meet Chris, a ski instructor and designer builder living in a scenic New Mexico ski town. He's battled sciatica for six months, stemming from an L3/4 herniated disc that coincided with his shoulder surgery recovery. Despite his rural setting limiting doctor options, Chris persisted in seeking help.

In our interview, we delve into L3/4 disc herniation, sciatica, and it's appropriate treatments. We clarify the indications for epidural injections and microdiscectomy surgery. Importantly, we address the misconception that fusion is not a recognized treatment for herniated discs causing sciatica. Join us as we explore effective solutions for sciatic nerve pain and empower those like Chris to find relief without unnecessary procedures.

I wish somebody would please explain what treatment is needed for spinal stenosis not caused by a herniated disc, but caused because of ligamentum flavum and other causes. Seems nobody covers that issue.

Will you please speak about your thoughts on ultrasonic surgery for decompression versus a traditional laminectomy for lumbar stenosis? I would love to hear your thoughts, as that is my challenge at the moment- severe lumbar stenosis l4l5 with leg numbness/weakness and disc disease. Thank you.

Have a question Doctor, I have sciatica and spinal stenosis, as soon as I had them I had trouble with both knees, hard clicking, pain and was diagnosed with arthritis. Do you think by me always leaning forward due to the stenosis when walking has anything to do with my knees being like that? Thank you Doc! Stay well!

What about the other buldging discs causing multi level radiculopathy?

I have very little nerve pain or back pain but my calf is very weak and I have pins and needles down back of leg and into left side of foot. I walk with a slight limp.
MRI can’t be done for a while yet.
Anyone with similar experience? I herniated l5-s1 years ago and assume it’s reinsured but the lack of any real pain is baffling.
Anyone have ideas?
