Can we talk about that one plane going straight into it?

I flew Guangzhou to Urumqi, Xinjiang and the plane flew over Tibet. There was lots of turbulence from air currents. The view from the plane was amazing though, all you could see was snow covered mountain ranges

Also the ground air creates friction against the mountains and terrain down in the mountains which leads to something called eddies being created which are swirls of air that can cause the plane to experience a lot of turbulence 🙌🏼

Train travel to Tibet is supreme. You can stop in Xining city (which is a amazing city mixed with Islam and Tibetan Buddhism. for a day or two to get used to the altitude, then get on aboard to enjoy the last 12 hours trip with amazing plateau scenery.

I don’t know if it was Tibet, but my grandpa was almost killed flying over the Himalayas. He was a cargo pilot during ww2 and it was really foggy. He could hardly see anything then suddenly the fog let up and a mountain was right in front of him. He swerved up and got out of there. But it was close

There are five airports in 5 of the 7 prefectures of Tibet, i.e. Lhasa Gonggar Airport (3600m), Nyingchi Mainling Airport (2949m), Chamdo Bangda Airport (4334m), and Shigatse Peach Airport(3782m) and Ngari Gunsa Airport (4274m).
Tourists flying in by air usually enter Tibet via Lhasa Gonggar Airport and Nyingchi Mainling Airport.

Best flight in the world used to be the weekly Nepal Airlines Dubai-Doha-Kathmandu flight, departing Dubai at 1.00am, & starting in Pakistan airspace as the sun was rising, you'd fly parallel to the Himalayas mountain range all the way to Kathmandu...It was absolutely spectacular to see....

Everyone’s talking about “that one plane” but nobody’s talking about the 2nd plane flying straight towards it.
Or even the plane that may have just left the Tibet region

In World War 2, pilots hated to have to fly "over the Hump" - over the Himalayas.

Planes which fly there need a special emergency oxygen equipment. Normally the passengers oxygen is generated by a chemical reaction, not from a bottle like the cockpit oxygen supply. The passengers oxygen supply is only for a limited time (which covers the descend), but over Himalaya it wouldn't be sufficient. So the planes operating there must be equipped with an extended passenger oxygen supply

The high-speed railway network in China extends to Lhasa, offering connectivity from various other cities. Additionally, airports in the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces provide closer aerial access to this region.

Reminds me of flight 311 that flew straight into mountain near Kathmandu in early 90s. Zero visibility and pilot error, but they were still 3.5km above ground (3, 500m altitude) so anywhere else they would've been fine. Those gigantic mountain ranges are deadly.
