I've been wanting to make one of those for a while, I've been through countless videos over the years but yours is definitely the best one so far !
I have an outer rudder but I think this design would work best anyways.

I've brought my boat in Norway and I loved biltema when I was there hahaha I'm now sailing through Europe, I've fixing been fixing up my boat in Ireland for 2 years and next summer head down south!

As a fellow self steering self designer/builder I think your time to build is very accurate.
your lock down mechanism is great! it's actually better than what I see on many commercial models.
Height definitely helps a lot for a horizontal axis wind vane, because you get longer leverage.
What happens when the boat is heeled? will the wind vane cause an adverse effect?

Nice boat by the way. Im thinking about windvanes myself (only 2 years now). I like your mechanisms and now I saw your Ideas I want/will push it more to a pendular version (if possible). Cheers from Belgium. ps : my goal is to place it on a small trimaran (F22)

This is definitely the way to go. Years ago I bought a 28ft yacht which had a wind vane attached. I took it off and put it in the garage for 5 yrs. Then couldn't work out how to put it back on, so I sold it for next to nothing. What an idiot.
Later, I discovered the mainsheet to tiller method using medical tubing as the rubber 'return' method. Its good because you can add as many bits of tube as you need to counteract the windstrength. And its cheap.
