What happened when Darth Vader met Anakin Skywalker’s childhood friends?

Informed a colony of freed Tatooine slaves was being neglected by their Imperial governor, Darth Vader investigated to confirm the report was true.

Discovering some of the colonists had built a podracer from salvage, Vader demanded to know who they are and he came face-to-face with his childhood friends Kitster and Wald.

Taken back to his time as a child on Tatooine, Vader stormed off seemingly dismissing his former friends. But, sensing something was not right, he positioned himself to defend the colony from an invading army of indigenous life.

Understanding the governor is neglecting her people - his friends - Vader had an arsenal sent down from his Star Destroyer to equip the colonists to protect and sustain themselves.

Even though Vader denies it, Anakin is still clearly buried deep down somewhere inside that black armor.

In Legends, Kitster isn't even surprised when Leia told him that Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. Would be interesting if Kitster in Canon suspected Darth Vader is his childhood friend.

That actually sounds like Vader. Even though he's ruthless against his enemies, he mainly demands loyalty and respect, if they gave Vader some level of loyalty and respect, this makes sense.

Anakin when he was a kid swore he’d come back and free all the slaves. After losing his mother to the sand people, and her being a slave her whole I just don’t think Vader’s conscious could allow them to be slaughtered like she was. It wasn’t just a suppressed anakin coming out. It was the guilt of not being able to protect his mother. Losing his mom pushed him towards the dark side yes but I think his mothers voice lingering in his head is what kept anakin from completely being destroyed by Vader after losing padme. I believe shmi was vital to anakin/vader being the chosen one. The memories of her kind motherhood gave him the kick he needed to come back to the light and save Luke from palpatine
