I think Vader is a good example for villains who change. He did absolutely horrible things, and he cannot ever be redeemed, but he can accept penance. I think him sacrificing himself to defeat Palpatine was the only way out of the hole he dug himself into.

There is actually a canon comic that reveals that Anakin wanted to leave the Jedi order, and after the order refused Obi Wan to train Anakin outside the order, Obi Wan himself threatened to leave the order if that's what it took to fullfill Qui-Gon's wish and his own love for Anakin.
The reason I write all this, is that it could be the thing Anakin references when he says "Obi Wan thought as you do"
