Few points:
Zarqawi was not very popular with Alqaeda and bin laden during his initial Afghan days.
His mentor was not bin laden, but Abu abdulla al maqdisi.
He was not put in iraq, but he fled there after US crackdown of Afghanistan and gradually made his base in among kurds village. He had some funds from al qaeda with him though. This issue was picked up by US to frame as Saddam having connection with Al qaeda.

This guy Zarqawi was the guy who said they they would take over Europe, and he was correct because that is exactly what is happening with the help of Tony Blair and Angela Merkel with their freedom of movement and no borders philosophy.
