I grew up Charleston 50s through the 70s.
Folly was the closest beach to my home and it had the best waves for surfing. The pier (gone now? hurricanes) there had James Brown, the Temptations etc. on weekends. Great place.
Sullivans Island was pretty much just a residential neighborhood. Other than the historical forts I can't think of any place at all commercial there.
The Isle of Palms had some good bars.
Since I mostly spent my beach time in the water (surfing and fishing) I didn't think much of where I could lounge for hours so Folly Beach was my favorite.
