The Patna High Court has nullified a law that increased reservations for SCs, STs, Backward, and Extremely Backward classes from 50% to 65%. The court deemed this increase as ultra vires and in violation of the equality clause under Articles 14, 15, and 16 of the Constitution. This ruling effectively nullifies the Bihar Reservation of Vacancies in Posts and Services (Amendment) Act, 2023, and The Bihar Reservation (Amendment) Act, 2023. The judgment, delivered by Chief Justice K Vinod Chandran and Justice Harish Kumar, followed multiple petitions challenging these amendments. The proposed quota breakdown included 20% for SCs, 2% for STs, 18% for Backward Classes, and 25% for Extremely Backward Classes.

Good decision. This reservation policy, continued by the stupid vote bank politics of Congress party beyond the period originally envisaged by Ambedkar, should go in a phased manner, if India is to develop fast. Already two generations have enjoyed this facility snd they cannot enjoy it permanently. There should be a full stop somewhere.
