How the Negative Anima/Animus Can DESTABILISE your Typology

preview_player
Показать описание
The negative anima or animus can 'live' inside your dominant function, and either take control of it, or reverse the 'attitude' (i.e. swap it from introverted to extroverted) - clinically, this manifests itself as someone 'changing' types under certain conditions, with the end result being damaged psychosocial relating. In this video, we discuss how this can happen, using the mother complex as an example.

my god... thanks so much for that rant. I'd been getting impatient and dissatisfied, and i was starting to go back to looking around typology sites for an easy answer, an easy way to understand and validate my experiences, even though i kind of knew they didn't have it, and that i have the actual breakthroughs when i'm lost and just observing myself, well yeah that, bye

Edit: to be fair... it’s a coping mechanism, i think, we want others to mirror our experience, it’s just that typology is a shitty way to do it. And i can say that but not always know it. But i guess i know it a little better now

Naming MBTI as neurotic, really put something into perspective. In retrospect I see how I got drawn into the topic and how I tried to adhere to the system half consciously and how that created problems. It's actually quite freeing to see how flexible our typology really is. Thanks again for your work this is pure gold.

Very interesting and intricate discussion, thank you Steve, Pauline and James 🙏.

It never cease to impress me when clinicians are able to discuss the Negative Anima and Animus without someone succumbing to it within the group. “Speak of the devil and he shall appear”, as it were. There is an episode of ‘ThisJungianLife’ in which three admirable Jungian therapist discuss the very same concepts and things get hilariously heated.

At 10:38, to add to your discussion, while I can’t remember the exact quote, Jung found that many young individuals when encountering their Anima/Animus for the first time (immaturely) demanded that their social environment immediately adapted to it. This has very much been my own experience. What I’ve found is that it is a completely natural (i.e. instinctive) reaction, which consequently belongs to the lifelong ‘marrying of one’s inner women’.

My question to the three of you is whether you have found that the ‘destabilization of one’s typology’ by the hands of the negative anima/animus belongs to the rite of passage of the mythical ‘Journey to the underworld’, and consequently is - besides a psychosocial disaster - also under certain circumstances a preferable development?

Just rewatching old videos to revise some stuff. Didn't realise how golden the intro is up until now lol

I used to get INTP when I was relatively unconscious, for the past 5-6 years I've been getting INFP. I am a gifted child, failed by his parents, an I was always told how intelligent I am and that became my primary mode of ego trap. I then discovered my empathy and started to test as INFP.

You all not only just saved me a bullet but an entire clip with this one! Thank you for going through the complexities of this and breaking it down.
I'm not sure if anyone else would relate to this, but my head imagined it from a chess perspective. In, chess there are openings that define how the entire game may go. Typology would be like saying you play a certain chess opening. In other, words it's the "framework you go by". Which can be true under certain circumstances. However, if your framework of chess is just on that one opening (or just openings in general), then you are setting yourself up to lose. There are a lot of ways that the game can go, with or without that opening; as well as ways you would have to adapt instinctively if playing that opening wasn't in your best interest. Knowing the intricacies of your opening would not be enough to help you win the game even if you pick the "best" opening, just like knowing the intricacies of your MBTI type. It would only help you to a certain point (up to the middle game in chess) then you'll be going into even deeper chaos. It is a beginner's mistake to get lost in opening theory ironically. Just a line of thought that helped me relate to the topic a bit better.

Example, from 27:00 to 32:00, hits home for me pretty accurately. I'm not that into M-B typology, but I found it interesting to find out, few years ago, that I was an INFP. Or so I thought I was. This was exactly something my mother had been dumping on/in me for reasons I'm still sorting out a bit.

I had been trying to compensate this character for years, but just ended up falling victim to a trickster type of a teacher who "helped" me to strengthen my tendency to think and perform (extroverted thinking) and eventually assimilating with his character.

Lacking conceptual framework, I found interest in horned gods and characters, which I now understand symbolizing split and nature underneath the horns. This split manifested in me also as dysphoric feelings that came up in social gender-related situations.

It's a great relief to hear confirming words for something that I have been intuitively known: I need to follow my instincts. The tricky part here for me has been to get attuned with the proper wavelength. I'm getting there by trying to truthfully observe and live through what am I, actually, feeling.

Thank you so much for this content. It has been really helpful.

Hi, I'd like to offer some technical feedback: In this episode and others where you reference the "last episode", I have found it challenging to find them without a numbered sequence to the episodes or the name of the episode. I found this to be true searching for "Part 2" of your 3 part series on the Mother Complex. Links to the entire series in the notes would be very helpful. Thank you.

Never was that interested in typology. But, from what you've said, it seems quite logical. At the same time it can be seen through some ordinary circumstances in life. For instance, when there is some danger, there will be some particular reaction. For instance, assume there is a «calm type» (quite un-scientific) and if someone identifies with a «calm type» — in the stiuation of some peril, «calm type» would become something else. Maybe it sounds quite plebeian, but it shows the picture. Also, it points out to the matters of a context.

It's synchronicity, i'm a INTP, lol

Interesting. I’ve never heard typology described this way. Though I have wondered about the ability of suggestion within the theory.

Can a daughter take on the type of the Father. for instance in a situation where the father was the primary caregiver not the mother?
