I think a good mix is the only thing you need for good mastering.

💯% and also some acoustic panels. Most artist and engineers don't understand that proper acoustic treatment is for the mix and master. So that you are mastering the song and not the room.

Agreed, this is a great list to get a great master.

A/B comparison can't be understated so I'll add it in. It's usually apart of some metering plugins, but metering can be like just aiming for a certain numbers and you drift away from using your ears just to achieve the loudest mix that hits -14LUFS 0dB True Peak and still has dynamic range. Comparing your track with your ears to a professional master from a top track in the same genre should clue you into whether or not you've hit the mark or not. If you guess during this process you'll get a thing, but it won't be your best thing.

just eq nd limit, multi band compress if any freq range sticks out ugly til it’s gone, otherwise you’re most likely overcompressing. i don’t like mid side eq on master. check your levels and dynamic range with analyzer to see how hard you’re hitting. mix in mono then check in stereo you’ll get great results

BUT without a properly acoustically treated environment you won't be able to dial in those frequencies accurately. Make sure you get your room right before chasing your tail buying new software or equipment.

Btw, always use linear phase eq for master, otherwise you might have issues with low end.

I used to use mid side eq often. I make a lot of ambient music and do a lot of panning. You gotta be careful with mid side eq definitely I feel because it can disrupt the panning and stereo image of a song. Always good advice/tips though regardless from you
