Shelly Motion is a new motion sensor from Shelly that is Wifi and they claim has a one year battery life along with a lots of other great features, including a light sensor and tamper detection, but how does it compare to all of the other motion sensors on the market?

Great video and just what I needed! I had just bought this motion sensor and a Shelly duo to work in my Hallway. I couldn't get them to work together and was about to send them back when I watched your video. I never knew about the shelly scenes (rules as you called them) and so it is now working perfectly! I had it going via node red in home assistant and it was very hit and miss before. Thank you so much for the video it has resolved the issues as reaffirmed my love of shelly devices.

Looks like a nice piece of hardware. Do you know by any chance if it supports continuous motion detection? My problem with most motion sensors is, that while remaining a longer time within the range of them, the lights would go off and I would have to start jumping and waving around for the lights to come back on on again. I saw in your video here, that one can choose between 1 to 10mins for the device to wait, before switching off lights e.g. But what, if motion happens during that time? Will this timer be reset then?

Great video, is it possible also to install it outside for the light on the balkony?

Great video! Personally I'm most interested in hardwired motion sensors for new construction. Covering a whole house can take 20-25 sensors and changing that many batteries would be quite annoying. No one seems to be reviewing hardwired solutions.
The most obvious is the Lutron LOS C Series, which can be IR, US, or IR+US. I'd love to see one of your in depth reviews of that sensor. Lutron is very proprietary so I guess it's hard for you to obtain and configure, but if you could it would be info that no one else provides. I hate to buy and install 25 expensive sensors without knowing what I'm getting!

Could the tamper sensor be used to turn off lights when detected?
Just thinking of our warehouse lights, as at the moment the light controls are on far wall of the warehouse and we have setup a flood light to light the way to the switches. However the amount of times I have walked into the warehouse and see people have left all the lights on are getting to frequent.
I was thinking of using this Shelly motion sensor to both switch all the lights on with the PIR, (using a shelly plus 1pm for each row (less than 16amp)), then to use the lux sensor to turn the lights off when its daylight outside (its a well lit warehouse).
I could save money by not having to fit multiple sensors and instead have it so they can touch the sensor to knock the lights off as they leave.

I'm excited to get one. If I like it I'll buy more. I've been doing a "roll my own" with an ESP8266. But the last one I built has a lot of false alarms when the heating system comes on. The sensor I used doesn't have any adjustment. And it's powered with a USB dongle plugged in the wall with a long ugly wire snaking across the wall.. If I wanted to make it battery powered, that's more stuff I have to build, plus learn how to program the ultra-low power processor on an ESP32. And I'd have to make a printed case for it all. In the end, I think the Shelly's price is fair for all the effort I'd have to put in to make something comparable.

What held me back from buying lots of these was the 1 minute blind time. That's just way to slow to re-fire. If it's just a software thing that would be huge. Thanks for calling it out.

Hey there fellow Scot - I'm enjoying your video series, great job! Just a heads-up on the set-up - it is strongly advised NOT to use the app (for any Shelly Device) - the app is the weakest link of some great hardware technology. Best to use the WebUI (after you enter the paring mode go to 192.168.33.1 with your phone connected to the device in your WiFi settings NOT your network); then connect to your network from there - it has option for DHCP, but is definitely advised to use their Static IP feature, where you can select a fixed IP of your choice (and outside your DHCP range would be preferred); after it is set there, you can then reconnect your phone to your network and go to the IP address you selected. There you have all the features & options directly without having to open the app. It's OK to use the app after its set up, but any programming etc is always best done through the WebUI.

Great video, eased my doubt about getting some of these. Checked conversion prices from your mentioned prices and should be about 55-58 AUS Dollars ... cheapest I can find in AUS is $76, phew that's a bit of a killer maybe

I have to add my 2p worth here - I bought two of these sensors about two years ago (before I read this review) so this is a kind of long term review. I use4 both of them to control lights via Alexa and I have to say they have performed flawlessly over this period of time. The batteries do seem to last about a year - at least that's the interval where I have had to recharge them.

I have had one glitch in the system, which happened a few days ago - I have one on our stairway and while transporting a new carpet upstairs, the sensor died (why? I have no idea!). Fortunately, with the assistance of a paper clip, I reset the device and it's back to normal operation again.

One anomaly I've noticed - my second sensor is located in the loft and that controls the lights via Alexa and a WiFi light switch - when triggered, the lights come on for 2 minutes, then switch off, but if movement is detected, it will immediately trigger again - I've tried to get the stairway sensor to work in a similar manner, but to no avail. Both sensors have the BLIND TIME set to the minimum of 1.

Overall, I am really happy with these sensors (having tried several others), I'd buy the Shelly sensors any time, despite the cost.

Sounds like an interesting option so thanks for the review
I like the reporting times for the light sensor as I have a battery powered motion sensor that sets this far too high, to preserve battery power and you can't override this but thankfully I can run it off a USB cable and that gets me better reporting times
Which raises the question, can this be powered off the USB cable or can it only be used for charging the battery?

Can you turn the motion sensor detection lights off?

Want to say setup was not that easy for me. I bought this based on Paul Hibbert's video on this sensor and I had to contact tech support because neither the motion sensor nor contact sensors I bought from them wanted to show up in the app. They told me to do a factory reset, connect directly to the device's SSID/WiFi signal, go to 192.168.33.1 and then connect to the network that way. I still had even more issues within the app, but eventually I got everything to work.

I hope it comes to Australia. At $40US ($52 Australian) sounds like a bargain. The reaction speed is fantastic. I subscribed.
