Poetry Recommendations for Beginners

Here are my recommendations for beginners to poetry! Poetry anthologies are a great place to start. I particularly recommend Sleeping on The Wing: An Anthology of Modern Poetry. I also recommend listening to poetry read aloud. Specific poets I think are good for beginners include T.S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, and Allen Ginsberg.

Richard Siken got me into poetry and I definitely recommend him from everyone. He is a bit hard to understand sometimes but there's so much emotion and vulnerability in his poems that they resonate even if they're not understood

My poetry book "The Last Time I Had To See You" is accessible yet creative and original, and is getting 4 to 5 stars everywhere it is online, even on Amazon, and It is not insta work nor tumbler verse.

Raymond Carver's All of Us is american verse by a great short story writer, and Hermann Broch wrote The Death of Vergil, almost a novel as a poem. Orlando by Virginia Woolf made me excited to look up Alexander Pope but the real reward was discovering Charlotte Mew and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Paul Laurence Dunbar and James Weldon Johnson are TONS of fun.

William Carlos Williams is good. The Red Wheel Barrow is interesting. I would love to hear to critique the poetry of Etheridge Knight.

hey I’ve noticed that you sadly aren’t active on YouTube anymore but IF YOU DO SEE THIS, I would love to shoot you a list of poets that I really enjoy in hopes of some kind of direction? I really enjoyed both Anna Mae Wong’s “Oculus” and Jackie Wang’s “The Sunflower Cast a Spell to Save Us from the Void, ” two more contemporary works, with Charles Bukowski and Billy Collins as my favorite post-modernists? I’m not quite sure how to go about separating modern poetry and if you have any advice, I would GREATLY appreciate your opinion. (also, not a poetry collection but I absolutely love the poetics of Neitzsche’s Thus Spake Zarathustra)

This Place.

This must be
The Place.

(Broken Hearts
Come to Die.)

A
Pit of
Love
Disgraced!

(which
makes
Once Joyous
Angels Cry.)
_

My
Impoverished
House of Filthy
Creatures.

(with cold,
Indifferent
Features)

Where Shadows
come to feast
upon The Memory
of Her Smile!

(A Domicile
Of Hope Defiled.)
_

I walk Sad
Empty Halls
still seeking,
ways to restore
My Former Grace;

as she Waits
somewhere
(darker)
Dreaming!!!!

(Of a Love to
Free Her from
This Place.)
