Filming

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I can already tell this is the best hair tutorial I've seen - I've never heard someone talk about it as a series of cylinders

It's amazing how you can reproduce the same face in different angles. You make portrait painting look so easy when it's the hardest part 8n anybody's career as an artistic painter.

Super helpful, Chris. Thanks for sharing each of these examples. Really enjoyed this and look forward to doing more portrait sketches to explore these tips/techniques.

It blows me away how anyone can capture someone’s likeness with paint or even a sketch. Thanks for the video Chris.

I will never forget Troy's beautiful beach waves. That man was a stud then and he's a stud now. Thank you so much for using him in this lesson! I would hang all these on my wall.
Edit: Brad-thirst aside I really learned a lot from this one. I do comic lineart so I have the shapes of hair down when it comes to lines, but now that I've started getting Into painting I was really struggling with understanding how to use lighting as a way to insinuate shape.

Good video. I especially like how you show us the paint--brush strokes CLOSE-UP and normal speed part of the time so we can almost feel how much pressure you put on the bristles . None of the other "on line teachers" take much time in such a tactic. Thanks!

Simplifying videos are very helpful, especially with hair and other intimidating subjects. Didn't know who John Singer Sargent was until I saw your videos. His paintings are great.

I am just beginning to use oils....always used pastels and pencils. These videos are extremely helpful; even mores than an oil painting class I took a few months ago.
