How to Grow and Harvest Rhubarb

Knowing how to grow rhubarb is very rewarding.

Rhubarb is one of my favourite plants in my grow-your-own area. I remember my mum and dad growing them when we were kids, often making rhubarb crumble with them. The flavour was amazing because you've got that almost acidic sharpness, and with the sugar, you had the sweetness as well.

Rhubarb is also one of the easiest edible plants to grow. It’s frost-resistant, doesn’t need much care and attention, and can be grown from seed, dormant crown, or from pot-grown rhubarb.

Here is my quick guide to growing and harvesting rhubarb.

Fantastic information and a quality presentation! I just moved to a house up in northern Minnesota that already has an established rhubarb plant that was regularly harvested my wife's grandmother for decades. It's starting to sprout up now up so I was looking up information about how to go about harvesting it and your video hit the spot! I could really feel your passion for this plant! Your channel subscribers are going to shoot through the roof if you keep videos as good as this one! 👍🏻

I had to move my Rhubarb plants to raised beds due to suffering from Crown Rot due to our heavy clay soil. I moved each plant to a fire ring raised bed, which lifts them off the ground by one foot. They are doing great in their raised beds.

I recommend a rhubarb drink. Around 500g rhubarb, water to cover the rhubarb, 1 or 2 cinnamon stick, 1 star anise. Let that simmer til the rhubarb is very soft. Filter it so you have a red liquid. If you want a sour drink you can leave it as that, but I recommend adding 250g sugar at max I like 120g

Love your video! I'm planting an apple tree and thought of planting the rhubarb around it. Hopefully it works well together. I wanted to see this video as a friend was kind enough to share her rhubarb with me. she said hers are huge. I'm wondering now how mine will be as although I'm in the same state it is code in Northern Minnesota than Central. We'll see.

You should try making a true southern US strawberry rhubarb pie. It is my favorite pie. Tart and sweet.

I love it! Looks like a mini gunnera (toxic) but it is edible! Beautiful form and function too. Thanks for the info David.

Rhubarb juice is very refreshing. Make syrup with sugar then dilute for juice.

David, may I please ask which variety you're growing, since it seems quite neat and compact? Victoria seems to become too enormous for the pot and position I have available - in semi-shade on an east facing balcony) - and you mentioned Timpany being good for forcing early growth, or, at the end of the season. Which of these would you recommend, or do you perhaps know of another which would be best to begin with?
