Fun Factoid: Lafayette, who of course was back in France at the time, sent Washington the key to the Bastille when it was seized at the start of the French Revolution, and it hangs in the main dining room at Mt Vernon.

I’ve been to Mount Vernon about 3 times I loved it each time. I would love to go back again. The whole place is so amazing.

What a rich history! Great animations/pictures. I have say that your President, Mr. Washington, had simple but such elegant taste. Thanks for the video.

I always enjoyed the fact that during the Civil War, it acted as a neutral zone and that Union and Confederate soldiers checked their weapons at the door and were asked to take off their uniforms to visit, which the vast majority did without issue.

I learned about this story when I visited in 2018.

God bless those dear Ladies who had the foresight to save this historic home...

One of the better furniture companies used to make a reproduction of George Washington’s desk, pictured in his study. It was gorgeous. I hope that as the economy turns around, that manufacturers of quality furniture will, once again, look to historic pieces for their inspiration. Mt. Vernon is a national treasure. Three cheers for Ann Pamela Cunningham who responded to the call to save it. Every American child should have the opportunity to experience Washington’s home and the wonderful education center that has been added over the last, recent years. It is of paramount importance to preserve our American history.

I was there in 1977 during our DC trip in junior high. I took lots of pics with my Kodak instamatic, but would definitely appreciate it more now!

I've been to Mt Vernon. If you've never visited I'd recommend it. Its amazing, Washington thought out his ambitions, and how to attain them, , very well. But part of that visit is grappling with the fact...and it is a fact friends, that the father of our nation was a slave holder. The slave quarters are front and center. Now...I've never been to Moticello...its on my bucket list, but I know I'll feel the same dichotomy of inexpressible pride and deep, deep regret, that this amazing American founder, like Washington, held slaves. I think its a tour every American should take, and I think the history should be presented for what it was and what it is....its an opportunity to grapple with what America promises vs what it came from....and it should be required education for our kids. Thanks for this..great vid. Keep up the good work!

I visited My Vernon as a five year old child and I remember the beautiful front porch and sitting in a rocking chair enjoying the Potomac River view down the grassy knoll. I still have the white cotton bedspread reproduction of the one George Washington had on his bed that my mother purchased as a souvenir. Beautiful post - I really enjoy your channel!

My dad was in the US Army during WWII. He shipped overseas on the USS George Washington and shipped back on the USS Mount Vernon. Not that big of a deal, but he always thought that was kinda cool. Now thinking about it, might have been the other way around.

Before leaving for America George Washington’s ancestors were tenant farmers on the Spencer estate of Althorp.

We were there in June of 2019, but no photography was allowed inside the house. The restoration of the "oh so trendy at the time" green receiving room is wonderful. The dining room at the Carlisle House in Old Alexandria is very close in color, and that 18th Century home is also worth a visit. Mt. Vernon also features a farm, grist mill, distillery, and my favorite, the formal gardens. Quarters and work spaces of some of the enslaved workers are also reconstructed; displays identify some of them by name, and show what their lives might have been like. A difficult part of history, but I appreciate seeing the hard work of so many people acknowledged. On a lighter note, the view of the Potomac is incredible. It was very weird taking an Uber to and from Mt. Vernon...I felt like I should have arrived in a carriage.

Great video, Ken. I particularly enjoyed the drawings showing the growth of the house. I was at Mount Vernon in 1970 when I was nine year old. Now that I'm way older I would appreciate the experience even more along with the porch facing the Potomac. What a great place to sit in a chair and read a book and enjoy the view. I've read that the cupola on the roof of Mount Vernon is 18 inches off-center, but I can't remember why! I was reading in a book about the dishes and furniture and such that are in the White House (though President Washington and the First Lady never actually occupied the mansion) and was surprised to learn that the Washingtons were criticized in their day for what was then considered a lavish lifestyle while compared to the wealthy of today George and Martha lived well but rather simply.

The children, were Martha's from her first marriage. George had no children

I love Mount Vernon and it was fun seeing the older views of its interior in your vlog before they restored it to its current state. I subscribe to their channel too and it’s amazing how they have followed the evidence to put it back as closely as they can determine to the way GW knew it. Very cool !
