EVs are Costing California Millions

It's about the environment...until they realize they're not making as much money.

So California is instituting a pilot program to charge folks for miles driven...in place of the gasoline tax. Not following in the steps of Ohio (adding a surcharge to registering an electric vehicle), the state of California, which relies primarily on funds from gas tax to cover their road maintenance budget, finds themselves losing millions and millions a year.

Ya right, "Road improvement" AKA. General Fund.

The problem with pay per mile is many of us drive in multiple states. So not all miles driven are in our home state. Are we going to have to pay road use taxes for every state we drive in?

I also wouldn’t trust people to take pictures of their odometer and be truthful about it. The only way to make that work is to have a state inspection to record the miles each year.

If vehicles get tracked each state could identify the miles driven in each and each tax you appropriately but there’s no way I’d put a tracker in my cars and that would most likely be unconstitutional anyway.

West Virginia did this like 2 years ago.

I think it was $100 for a hybrid, and $200 for a full EV.

I wouldn't know. Lol 🤷‍♂️

Exactly why I'm selling my house and moving my company to Texas. I don't drive an EV but I'm tired of the socialist government of California

You obviously know that the point of tax credits is to foster a national EV industry and make the US competitive with the world (China).

The unanswered question is if this ultimately good or bad for US industry in the long term. Hard to say at this point in time.
