Today on Buckle Up Harry drives the Ssangyong Rexton, Ssangyong's three row, body on frame, SUV. It's an impressive car, with luxury appointments, excellent capability and seemingly no weak points. So why is it 20K cheaper than it's closest rival, the Land Rover Discovery?

Up against cars such as Land Rover Discovery, BMW X5, Mercedes Benz GLE, Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus RX, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Kia Sedona, Skoda Kodiaq, BMW X7, Mercedes Benz GLS, Nissan X-Trail, Peugeot 5008, Seat Terraco, SsangYong Rexton, Toyota Highlander and Volkswagen Touareg will the next generation blow them all out of the water?

Ssanyong full stop. I've had a 2012 Korando for 2 years. Couldn't find another 4wd with space for my 3 kids that had the same spec for the money. I've really enjoyed the car

I love my rexton. I've had it for 2 years now and it's absolutely brilliant.

Under rated
I've got a 2014 Korando, had it for three years, never had any issues with it
I'd definitely consider another.

For anyone interested in this car, don't get the 20" rims. 18" are more comfy.
Also, for another 1000E you can get the Ironman 4x4 suspension kit and it makes the driving much better, and the comfort, especially for the middle/back rows is greatly improved. It is truly a great car, I'm extremely happy with it!

I have a ssangyong dealer just 5 miles away. The only thing that puts me off is how easy is it for parts or is the dealer network quite good. I used to have a Jeep grand cherokee wk.. I loved that thing and this looks like it would be a goid successor for that.
Live in Highlands of Scotland so I'm a big fan of a decent 4x4.
Love the channel 👍

20 grand cheaper and I bet a hell of a lot more reliable.

Had this generation when it first launched late 2017 - what was then the Ultimate was more or less the same spec as the new Ultimate+ - they removed a lot of the spec over the years and now added back in for a bit more money (but nowhere near the sort of increase of other brands). It is an excellent vehicle, extremely well built and reliable. We moved on from it a few years ago, never should have let it go. Amazingly, residuals are extremely strong - to put that into perspective, the car we had was worth c.£27k when it was 18 months old - that same car, now 5 years old, is still worth £27k! You'll struggle to find a Rexton of 3/4/5 years old, regardless of mileage, for less than £25k. We now have a Musso Rhino - a quite different driving experience given the suspension and length and the Auto box is Aisin 6 speed, rather than the now upgraded Hyundai box in the Rexton. My few criticisms of the Rexton in it's earlier form was the gearbox, the auto box was not a strong point at all - it often struggled to find a gear when under acceleration which really impeded any quick progress - the engine is more than capable. The new Hyundai unit is vastly better and really complements the car. Ssangyong don't claim this to be on a par with the Discovery, but knowledgeable buyers will recognise it will give you everything the Disco would for far, far less money and, truthfully, be much more reliable. I cannot recommend it enough - makes me want another.

Just bought a 2017(G3), and the reason i bought it is because of the low gear transfer gearbox. I taking my boat on the Danube, and 4x4 is a must. What you need to about the Danube, it is kind of rocky, which you use making concrete. Very though for a car!! The boat and trailer is 1300 kg. This last place i picked the boat up, is very tricky. I got stucked there couple of times with a Grand Vitara, and less than half of weight combo. Anyways, the Rexton came out, without spinning the wheel. I couldnt believe it. Neither the guy who was with me, doing some work on the trailer. The car is a bit rougher for ride quality like my previous car(Santa Fe), but who really cares. Overall, i will find out how dependeable they are, but so far i love it. As for value for the money, nothing is even remotely close

Great review I had kyron years ago and loved it even if it was an ugly car, for value for money, I believe you have hit the nail on the head the other companies are just ripping you off, well done for having the guts to say it 👍🏻

I bought it due to its weight, which in the real world weight is more important than ancap rating. The seats don't fold down into the floor because the spare wheel is under the back of the car and is up really high to allow off road clearance.

Have a 2022 Rexton ELX. Upgraded suspension by Dealer, giving a 40mm lift, which is much better for Australian roads. Ridiculously cheaper than rivals. Drives very nicely on and off road. Apart from the same parts supply issues every brand has currently, can't really fault it. Will tow my 3000kg+ caravan easily. Why would I want a Landrover that constantly breaks down, or a Toyota, or Ford Everest, for $20-40K more?

Hey, whats your height ? It helps to compare when standing under the boot door or the 3rd row seats

Hi mate, really enjoy the video. I’m tossed between the Rexton and LDV d90. Which out of these 2 would you recommend? Cheers

This is great video, thanks for making it! This Y400 Rexton is starting to look like The Car I might need as my next ride! Been driving a T31 Nissan X-Trail for few years, but I could use some extra space and 3rd row for occasional use. It's been a overwhelming to find a newer 4x4 with about the same level of practicality as the T31 (and sadly, I can't afford a Discovery 3 or 4) at reasonable price. Just spotted a really nice 2020 Rexton for sale near me, it's low mileage top spec and only three years old, but the price is less than half of what it was as new! That's amazing value, IMO!!! That Rexton is still out of my budget, but getting really close to acceptable. ;-)
BTW, how would you compare this Rexton to, say, facelifted R51 Nissan Pathfinder? The Pathfinder is more agricultural on the inside, sure, but how do these two compare in on-road manners?

Thanks for your review.
Helped a lot for my decision making. 😊

The 20 inch rims would be the main cause for the "jiggle" you are feeling . 4x4s should be shod with 16, 17 or 18 inch rims - less metal and more rubber to the ground. I had a rx290 rexton shod on 16inch rims and yokohamas cross terrain tires, what a smooth blissful ride she was. There's saying in Oz (Australia), if you want to go to cutbacks, take a land-rover, but if want to come back, take a Toyota. The rextons have the same reliability as Toyotas, just ask the owners .0
