London Walk: Peckham | Rye Lane & Peckham High Street | SE15【4K】

The district of Peckham lies in the south London borough of Southwark.

Its name comes from the River Peck, a small stream that ran through the area until 1823 when it became enclosed.

The main shopping street, Rye Lane, became one of the most important shopping streets in south London in the 19th century. In the 1960s a number of high-rise flats were developed in the area. A period of decline took place into the late '70s due to high unemployment.

Following this, a £290 million regeneration programme from the late 1990s was undertaken. One component of this is Peckham Library (seen around the 14-minute mark), which opened in March 2000.

Perhaps the greatest ever TV sitcom, Only Fools and Horses, was set in Peckham, although no actual location filming took place in the area (correct me in the comments if I'm wrong). We do however have a pub called the Nag's Head on Rye Lane featuring in the video. Whether this was named in tribute or not I'm not sure!

I used to live at the top of Peckham Rye and just loved going shopping on a Saturday in Rye Lane. What a cultural melting pot!

My very first job at age 14 was at McDonalds in Peckham. I also opened my first bank account at Barclays on Peckham Rye which is now closed. It may be a dump to some but I love Peckham..lol

Looking not good with all that graffiti on shop shutters and on the wall above the shops, that end of Peckham was proper nice back in the day with the lido out doors swimming, even the lazer Drome is all gone, had some proper good times there those where the day's 🤗

Peckham has Become sorry to say a dump of an area. When I was living there during the 70s, it was far better, than it is today. I hope all filthy and loud-mouthed people, either change the way they conduct themselves or else be sent back to their parent's countries. I hope for the best for all, even those that I hope and pray, will reform themselves and make Peckham and surrounding areas a wonderful and great place to live, work and spend quality time with their families and friends.

I worked in peckham @ 1997 what a shit hole it was, couldn't even go out at night because of the people of colour. Worked on peckham rye station converting the arches the place was full of wallets form people being mugged on the platforms. Police car sirens going all day... perhaps it's changed
