Jolly Excellent Peckham Rye - Spiffing London Walking Tour

preview_player
Показать описание
This is a rather excellent walk around Peckham Rye in South London. One of the most multicultural parts of London with a splendid history dating back to King Henry I.
Did you know that if you look around there are angels all around in Peckham. William Blake saw them in an oak tree here.
There's pie and eels at Manze's, the golden mile shopping district which once rivalled Oxford Street, a Victorian bike shop, Persian supermarket and cafe and many other places with the usual fun banter.
Did you know there's a knife forge under the arches beneath the station? A local brewery with the freshest beer in Peckham and the best vegan Restaurant in the world, Omni (I know because it's my cousin's!)

Dear Gods.... what a blast from the past. I grew up in Peckham in the 60's/ 70's and I remember going into that Sainsburys when they still served you at the counter, counters which ran up and down the sides of the shop. Next to C&A was a Woolies, and Christmas wasn't complete without a visit to Santa's grotto in Jones and Higgins' basement! There was also Pelican House which was a school for the blind. Just down from there was a shop where we used to buy bags of broken biscuits, opposite Oliver Goldsmith where I went to school. I lived in Dalwood Street, opposite the pub and Udens Undertakers :D Spent many happy hours in Peckham Rye park too, and I think I spotted a shot of the rose gardens in the video :)

My favourite youtube channel by a stretch.
Lil lost Lou's music has become so integral to the vibe of your vids. I cant imagine them without her.
Thank you.

I was born and bred in this area in the 50’s and 60’s. Brought back a lot of happy memories growing up there. Can still recall the high street shops that are no longer present. Brilliant video, thank you.

As usual a top tour professionally produced. I seriously think you need to be discovered for TV. You’re so much more interesting and charismatic than most modern TV stars/presenters. Hey what do I know though…..

So Finally did Peckham. I grew up in Peckham and its so good to hear a little more history than I already knew. I went to Jones & Higgins on a regular basis especially at Christmas to see Santa. A little story I was told, not sure how accurate but.... When Jones & Higgins closed down the shop sat empty for many years because it was a listed building and restricted any modernisation. Then someone discovered it was only the Clock that was listed, so they knocked the building down and built a new shopping centre. In the 1970's the odeon was a few doors along from Wilson's bike shop. Saturday morning pictures were followed up by staring in Wilson's window at the bikes. But you didn't mention the Peckham lido. Open air pool opposite where the totem pole is. There was a blue fountain/cascade at the end and is the only thing that survived. The pool was filled in and the buildings removed, but the blue fountain is still there.

At the Wilson Bicycle Shop, I was waiting for you to say something about the famous picture of Prime Minister Harold Wilson repairing a bicycle.

Just watched this with my 97 year old dad who used to live in Daneville Road, Camberwell Green. He loved it and spoke about the Italians on Camberwell Green. Thank you so much

Great Video for a rainy Sunday in the states. Love the music, guess it’s your sister, she’s great. Must have been something good in the water your mom drank. God knows what my mom must have been fed.

Absolutely love your videos.
I'm a Bristolian and we're quite proud that😊 Del & Rodneys estate was filmed in Bedminster Bristol, or at least some of it was along with other scenes across the city.
(Bonus point) The opening shot of 'Minder' with Terry & Arthur walking down the steps of Bridewell police station Bristol, which is now an arts space.
All the best 👍👍

I lived on Bellenden road in 1999. Away from Bellenden village as they call it now, past the school where you read the plaques, on the right was Desmond’s barbers 💈 where the 80’s soap was based, though I’m sure most of it was filmed in a studio. My sister met her husband at car maintenance class in the school whilst working on her Austin Maxi. The superintendent on the Original cast of the tv show The Bill lives on Choumert Grove.

I'm so glad that you haven't changed despite our current state of affairs in this world. I don't know if I'll ever get to England, but I can guarantee you're more thoughtful than most other tour guides. Truly a gem.
