there was a time in the UK not too far back that dairy farmers were so thin on margins you basically were alive to keep the herd alive and that was it. and the bank manger

My great uncles a beef farmer here in wisconsin and I'm slowly working my way up in the trucking industry so I can eventually get land and do either dairy or beef, I don't wanna do it to be rich, I just wanna have that semi consistent schedule and I wanna wake up every morning, look outside and see everything I've built, I just wanna have the fulfillment of doing something meaningful

This is awesome to hear, I help around my family's 150 holstein dairy cows farm in NE Iowa.

I'm usually the one who takes care if the calves morning and night, as well as help with milking the herd. It's hard work but rewarding.

What he said is true we don't have alot of land, but what we grow is used on the cattle. Our operation might might not be the most technical. We don't have robotics around our place. The one thing we have is a collar system (Health/Heat detection) on all our milk cows and beeding heifers.

In the olden days being a dairyman meant never taking a vacation. In more recent generations, vacation meant taking your wife to the farm show for a week once a year. In the modern era, and a robotic dairy with 2000 to 4000 milkers, the CEO and his wife live on the lake by the golf course miles from the feedlots and creamery, and review production reports in an air conditioned office. His truck is always polished.

Growing up, the HARDEST working farmers/stockman was the dairman. No vacation, no late days, those girls are their LIFE and they treat them as such. Such a great relationship between the animal and stockman.

My grandpa was a dairy farmer. Hardest working guy I know. Sold the cows years ago but still farms the land. He won’t stop!

3rd generation farmer, I don’t quite have the eye for it but my dad can glance at a cow and tell what’s wrong with it from the truck 40 foot away it’s absolutely insane

10 yrs old with 4 pneumatic milkers, 5 am, milking 60 head. And itvwas growing corn, hay, and 10 acres of Burley Tobacoo. 4 days off outta the year. Its progressed so much i sdont even think they get cow shit on their boots. It was a different time and a way of life. You learned alot about discipline and hardwork.

According to my mom, my great grandma ruined the family dairy farm in Kansas by mistaking fertilizer for feed pellets. They lost everything and had to move back to town.

The enthusiastic utilization of genetic improvement technology in the dairy industry over the last 50 years is pretty amazing.

My family is 7th generation dairy farmers in AZ. My grandfather never needed a vet, he artificially inseminated them himself, and he taught my mom all he knew. He just retired 5 years ago at 72. Hes also a marine veteran, And he still wishes he could do it physically. It is in his blood, he started helping his dad and grandfather when he was 6 yrs old. I have the black and white photo of him milking his first cow.❤

Used to install Lely robotic systems for a few years. Those farmers are on point for the most part. The better ones you can tell by how much they pay attention to their feed mixtures of alfalfa and stuff. But understand that you need constant upkeep on those robotic systems. We were on site to the same systems once a week some twice a week doing repairs and maintenance
