These Kids All Traveled Solo

These kids all traveled solo and had unforgettable experiences. In 2015, a 4-year-old boarded a bus in the middle of the night trying to go on a slushy run. In 2016, JetBlue accidentally flew one mother’s 5-year-old boy to Boston, Massachusetts, instead of New York City. In August, 17-year-old pilot Mack Rutherford completed a solo trip around the world. Inside Edition Digital’s Andrea Swindall has more.

I love how the first two kids put themselves in intense danger just for some slushies 💀

I would never allow my kids to travel by themselves. The airport is overwhelming for adults. I can imagine for these kids. Happy that they ultimately made it to where they had to be. ❤️

The first time I flew it was by myself. I was 12 years old in 1990. I had no problems and figured out how to get around the airport all by myself. I was quite proud. My grandmother in Florida picked me up. We had no cellphones

I gotta admit. Daniel's driving was impressive for a 7 year old. Can't really ignore the fact that he hit several cars tho.

I got lost at Disney world for 3 hours as a kid. (A big crowd separated me from my family). I walked around the park myself with not one person stopping me.
I actually found one of my family members myself while others were looking for me with security.

As a kid, I used to fly alone to NY, Puerto Rico and San Francisco from Denver all the time. Never had an issue. I was instructed what to do and what not to do. I learned how to read my ticket stubs, how to find my gates, how to not leave my bags unaccompanied when going to the bathrooom or getting something to eat, where to go if I got lost or ask questions etc. My parents prepared me for all sorts of situations in case something happened. People need to teach their kids to think independently instead of just relying on the diligence of others.

i didn’t solo travel anywhere outside of my state/neighboring states until i turned 22 years old, and i was SO anxious without my family. i can only imagine how much more anxiety-producing and scary it would be for a literal child.

This segment gave me anxiety lol. I got into my mom's car when I was that age and it rolled backwards down the hill and slammed into a tree. Thank goodness the boy put on his seat belt. Glad everyone is ok.

I can speak from experience that it is not uncommon for children in Japan to be independent. Not only because Japan is one of the safest countries in the world: we were taught from an early about “stranger danger “ and boy did they drill it into our heads with those videos and how to avoid being kidnapped. Also we were given small devices where if you pull the string out of it, it would cause a sharp, loud ringing noise that no one can ignore (scaring would be kidnappers and alerting other around you of whats going on)

To a half Japanese person who has lived in Japan making your toddler is still very dangerous even though Japan is called a safe country you never know what’s going to happen

The Americans being shocked at the kids in Japan (which is shocking) but I’m just as shocked at the American parents allowing their kids to fly alone 🤯

As an Ohioan I confirm the second story happens on a daily basis.

These kids can’t fight the true boss. There was this Aussie 12 year old kid who had a fight with parents and then stole their credit card and rode his scooter to the airport and flew to Bali, Indonesia and did a solo holiday away from his parents. The federal police had to get involved and everything

I am Japanese and I had never let my kids go out solo untill they entered elementary school.
Once I was scolded by a deliverer for letting my 3year old kid play solo in the gated front yard of my house.
We live in an urban area so the situation may be defferent from those who live in a rural area.

I was in 1st grade ( so 5 or 6 years old ) when I started "watching myself". When school would end at 3pm, I would walk the 3 blocks to our house, let myself in and wait at home by myself until my father got home around 5pm from work.

In 5th grade when one of my friends Dashon almost got kidnapped while walking home from the same grade school as me, my parents had me get picked up from school by a baby sitter, which i stayed with at her house until my father picked me up after work.

Ironically, the baby sitter's house is where I got hurt. Some skin head kid who was also being watched by the baby sitter. Blocked the driveway and wouldn't let me back into the house. And I tried to sprint passed him, he threw a fist sized rock right at my head. I felt it hit my head, but i think because of the adrenaline, it didn't hurt. But I started bleeding instantly and had a lump for a couple of days.

He got "kicked out" from that baby sitter's house.

this happened to me at a resort. I went to the toilet and saw a little girl around 3 years old crying while looking for her family. She was terrified. I called one employee of that resort and told her about the situation. They looked for the girl's family which were already enjoying swimming in the pool, didn't even notice that the girl wasn't with them. Apparently, they changed into their swimsuits and went straight running into the pool without even remembering if the child was with them. Great parenting.

First time I traveled alone, I was 14 and with my 11 year old brother, we rode on a bus 6 hours up to see my sister. I wasn’t scared thinking about going without adults but that day that we were about to get on the bus I was terrified…

It's quite fun flying as an unaccompanied minor on planes, you get to board first and leave last. :)
( I flew like this 5 times)
