Had some nervous, training excitement, one day, near the SAW/Angolan border, directing Mirage F1 Jets onto imaginary ground targets, indicated by coloured, smoke grenades. In radio contact with unseen aircraft. Two black specs appear to our rear. Radio contact made. No previous experience instructions to pilots, something like this. "Flamgat Alpha, have you visual. Continue heading, bank right 5, 4, 3, - Bank right, bank right, roll out, ground target, enemy group, 1000 metres north of orange smoke and all that kak." A year later, left alone at Mpacha Airport, Katima area, with a radio on a wooden table. Next thing a C130 pilot asks for landing clearance. Me: "For fut sake, where is Captain Coragous? This is his job, not mine." C130 Pilot: "Say again?" Me: "Mpacha wooden table to C130, left hand down a bit, sorry, right hand down a bit. OK, roll out. Runway directly ahead, there is only one. Yes that's me at the wooden table under the doring boom." Afrikaans voice behind me: Ën wat is hierso aan die gang?" Me spinning around and saluting 😳: Oh, General Viljoen, where did you come from?"
