So, if you're a mechanical engineer and now going to become an industrial designer then it will be a deadly combination. The one who knows mechanism and also can think about end user's perspectives.

I was just looking for a video about mechanical engineering and industrial design yesterday, and this came out today!!

Thanks so much for this video! I'm a ME student in college right now and I have been having serious doubts on whether Engineering had been the path for me

Why do more people seem to know about mechanical engineering but not industrial design? I didn't find out about ID until my junior year of high school, and by then I had taken so many pre-engineering courses I didn't have time to include art. I ended up switching majors in college and am now really happy with ID, but I wish I'd known about it sooner

I’m trying to decide on my major right now, this video has been really helpful for me in order to understand the difference between Industrial design and Mechanical Engineering. Thank you!

Wow... right video at the right time! Awesome idea jimmy I personally love the discourse on design vs engineering (as an M.E. student myself) and the empathy vs functionality behind it all. I can only try to work on how I can bridge those gaps in my academic career so I can design not only beautiful objects, but to be able to do so with a knowledge of math and science. Look forward to more videos, please do keep it up!

I am a mechanical engineer wanting to get into the design sector. But i did not have a clear idea on the workflow of a design engineer. This video helped me to remove this vagueness to a large extend. I can make better informed decisions now thanks to you. Keep up the great work. Also, loved the Ferrari mouse concept. PEACE

It took me 6:30 to get that this is a mouse and not a futuristic car lol

This was perfect. I honestly want to do both

So Mechanical Engeneers and Industrial Designers pretty much complement each other. Wonder how much of a asset someone who happens to be both would be to a company or as a freelancer...

Thank you

Great video.
As a mechanical design engineer, Aesthetics is also considered, but more on the functional aesthetic side, meaning will it add value to the function, user friendliness of the part/machine, etc.
Ergonomics is also a factor in terms of machine operation, maintenance, etc.
I guess we cater more on industrial products rather than consumer products. But if we can make machines as aesthetically pleasing as consumer products, that would be lit.
Subscribed!

btw for us "Function is King!"

No problem about the audio, please release that video too...

You did so well! Completely removed all my doubts. I wasn't sure of mechanical engineering, but now I am. The design you were creating while explaining guided my curiosities and I got to see what I'm not really interested in about the product you were creating and what I want to know. 👏

This is very similar to describing a structural engineer vs. architect. Many people I've met think of them synonymously, when both have overlapping roles and need for collaboration, but different focuses. Architect has a lot to do with the looks and usage for the people inside and outside the building. They will also be considering how the structure will hold up as they conceptualize, but not to the extent of a structural engineer. The structural engineer ultimately ensures the building will be able to hold up and withstand forces of nature and usage.

I've a mechanical engineering degree through my bachelor's and currently pursuing my masters in industrial design. This was a good comparison but I expected that you would also talk how in industrial design the user research carries a huge weight before the actual ideation or designing, and also how in a professional atmosphere the design development goes from design to engineering.

Not to be picky, but the perspective of that recess of the scroll wheel in the mouse is a little off. However, good approach to the design language.

I'm a mechanical engineering student, and I'm debating if I want to take an extra year to do a minor in industrial design, thanks for all this great info!!!

I think it might make sense to understand industrial design in order to better communicate with full-on industrial designers and maybe do some industrial design legwork if I'm working on a project without an industrial designer.

That being said, that's an extra year of school and I'm not sure if that's worth doing instead of just... Working for a year and becoming a better engineer.
