Serious, well-researched journalism like this is always a pleasure to watch.
Keep up the good work.

Love what you're doing here, George! Very interesting project, and like you said, seems like Eidos Montreal had their finger on the pulse of gaming, just didn't have the direction or management to pull it off just yet.

Project W lives!!! At least spiritually. I can't wait to play Expedition 33, I hope they nail it.

Dat smile he gives when he knows his video will lead heads to turn, fall and ultimately this game being made.

Here in 2024: Project W lives, resurrected from the grave as another name - Expedition 33

Y’know I kind of wish this “Project W” was XV while Versus remained a spin-off by both Nomura and Tabata. So much potential as a main line FF and could have really brought some fresh blood on the franchise.

Maybe instead of full on planets (which would take too much work), have the characters traversing broken chunks of planets orbiting the core of a solar system. This would allow tthe communities, towns and lore found on each would be more focused and fleshed out since developers wouldn’t have to focus on developing an entire planet’s worth of content.

It also really fits square’s season pass approach to game development which if they just did right could have been pretty good. Instead of cutting chunks of the game out they could provide special updates and even DLC worlds to explore with loot and tough bosses that aren’t necessary to the game but provide more depth and background lore (eg.Artorias of the Abyss) Games like current XV with their heavy focus on story don’t really work in a season pass format. Since project W’s story sounds so much more simple there’d be room to grow and add to many characters.

In terms of exploration, I think KH3’s gummi ship with its openness and gummi customisations is a good template. Random encounters, ship levelling and customisation etc. Just put more in there and maybe even some randomly generated worlds for loot outside of the main 40 “planets” and that would have been awesome.

Maybe it’d be possible, but I guess we’ll never know.

Now this is serious analysis. If anything I'm hoping that EIDOS Montreal are secretly working on this concept right now.

They can still surprise us.

The more I hear about this the more excited I get for a game that really wouldn't have worked at the time.

The idea of deconstruction sounded interesting, but everything else just seemed too ambitious and possibly pretty boring. These new plot details also felt kind of disconnected from the details we got in the previous video, I'm not surprised this got canned.

The potential visuals alone make this whatcouldhavebeen hurt a lot. Hopefully someone else can take a swing at it with a "space is an ocean" approach, just with a livelier ocean than Wind Waker's.

Like an ocean with density anywhere between BotW's overworld and Abzu.

I look at this art and I cry a little inside that it never went anywhere. That "generic fantasy" look, build upon sci fi elements, does look weirdly cool and kind of creepy. I would love to have a game with this idea.

I wouldn't mind a "damsel in distress" kind of story line if it lasts up to two scenes and then builds up to a story line about exploring the world around you with a character going on a journey searching for great adventures.

It's always fascinating to see developers being determined to express their imagination.

So Expedition 33 is a French jrpg that’s coming out. Not sure why it’s code name was project w but supercastlebeast sent me here.

The problem of a setting with multiple planets is just the planet Earth itself has so much unique content that any fictional planet that supports life cannot hope to compete. Thus, the purpose of having multiple planets is defeated because the fictional planets, in many settings, may as well just be a single town; and you cannot encapsulate an entire planet in just a single town...

All of this just makes me really want this game to actually exist. We have the technology now. Final Fantasy in space sounds freaking divine.

I'm surprised at your comment about Wind Waker. I actually really loved sailing through the ocean most of the time. The music, changing weather, and scenery were all really great. I really wish there was a Wind Waker 2 being made. I loved the humor, art style, and sense of both adventure and serene calm. If they can capture a bit of that again with modern tech and gameplay concepts, it would be excellent.
