People really don't understand what you see as "trash" or "broken" might be someone else's treasure that they keep because it might have sentimental value or simply because they see it as a sort of lucky charm. In this case, I think that's what those toe pads represent to Maya.

I just find the 'maybe she can't afford them' comment hilarious.
Pointe shoes cost hundreds of dollars, plus the cost of other supplies like elastics, ribbons, sewing supplies, apparel (leotards, tight, skirts) costs hundreds of dollars, hair supplies and make up are costly too, toe pads cost a few dollars. If she can afford all that other stuff toe pads would be nothing.
Dancers have very strong, personal preference for what works best for them. She obviously prefers and does well with what she has, even if it doesn't make sense to anyone else.😊
