The monk's organs had been removed and replaced with scrolls containing Chinese writings

Correction : Not a Buddha statue, it is a monk statue. Or a monk relic.

It's not a statue of Buddha, it's a statue of a monk. It's very obvious, no Buddhist will mistaken it for a statue of Buddha.

The statue was bought privately about 30 years ago and the owner wanted the paint fixed, so he took it to a specialist who when examining the bottom, noticed a rolled up mat with chinese writing on it, took the mat off and you can see the mummy straight through the bottom of the statue.

Pretty sure that is why it was donated. So they knew that it had a mummy, and they were able to get tissue samples and everything from it. The mat that the mummy was sitting on was a 200-300 years younger than the mummy.

Also, the video cuts out, but when they got what they thought was supposed to be a sample of lung tissue, they found out it was paper with chinese writing on it.

Man that statue has better insurance than me! Full body CT scan!? I can barely get an X ray for less than 1000, let alone that.

He was stolen from one of the village in China. I think the villagers are still looking for his return. Could you return it back to the temple once you have completed the research please? Thank you.

It is amazing how much we still are learning about the past. I mean imagine the dedication it took to prepare yourself 6-10 years in advance for the mummification of your own body. That is just insane.

They also found small markings on the bottom which when translated read “Made in China”.

My neighbor has a large lifesize statue too, just like this one in his garden. He bought it from a store that sold old Cambodian religious items when the country was falling apart. The owner of the store had emigrated to the US during the war in his home country and would travel back to buy these items.
i need to tell him about the skeleton.

Be careful about buying old statues. You may bring trouble into your house by disrespecting something that you don't understand

Now it is known that the tests have revealed a surprise—the monk’s organs had been removed and replaced with scraps of paper printed with ancient Chinese characters and other rotted material that still has not yet been identified. How the organs had been taken from the mummy remains a mystery.

I doubt the Dutch researchers were “shocked.” They found exactly what they expected to find inside the “statue”. Why else would they put it in a CT scanner?

sokushinbutsu - you can still see them in some buddhist temples in japan in prefectures like yamagata, niigata and a few others. they have under 20 preserved mummified monks. i was so fascinated by the topic that my entire family ended up going to a short trip to see them in person.

In Kiev, Ukraine there is a monastery. Monks sealed themselves and only a small opening left for food and water. When monks stopped taking food and water they sealed it completely. After 50 years they opened the niche. If the corsp decomposes, they bury it. If I corsp mummified, declared a Saint. Build in 1051. I was there. Crippy.

I'm buddhist. We don't worship idols. Statues are merely a reminder of who we aspire to be like.
EDIT: If I say Christians worship crosses and Muslims worship the Kaaba you're not gonna like it, so quit attacking my religion--which you know nothing about.
