I studied anthropology in school. It is more accurate to say that humans and other apes had a common ancestor who was exclusively tree dwelling like an Orangutan. A time when Africa was much wetter and all rainforest. Several million years ago the ocean currents changed and much of the earth became drier. All this to say that walking on two legs came WAY before bigger brains. Gorillas and Chimps walk on their knuckles. Tree swinging apes can stand upright more efficiently than knuckle walkers, however their fingers drag on the ground. Upright walking freed up our hands and allowed us to develop much more sophisticated tool making. Also, we traded stronger arms for the ability to throw objects much more accurately. Tool making allowed us to eventually kill more meat and then control fire to cook food beginning about two million or so years ago. Modern humans, with both large brains and complex language, arose beginning about 300, 000 years ago in Africa and spread all over the world about 100, 000 years ago.
