This blew me away the first time I tried it...

I just love the idea that you can get back to exactly where you started, with zero evidence there was a hole there. I originally tried this when making a desk for my new workshop, and drilled a hole in the wrong place. I was amazed how clean it looked once I ground down the weld, so I knew I had to make this into a loop... #shorts #welding #metalworking #strangeparts

That moment when you realize that with a welder in your hands you can remake the world. An angle grinder and a welder is the perfect combination. Nothing is so pure.

With those tools steel bends to your will. I discovered this in my early twenties and saw the world in a new light. Steel constructs could be cut down, dissected, and hammered. Then the welder makes them whole again. Makes them into the image you desire.

Brothers and sisters, we can reshape everything. And it is beautiful.

If Sisyphus was a metal worker. This would be his punishment for eternity.

Нечем заняться?
Бери лопату и копай яму.
- но зачем мне её копать?
- потом закопаешь...

Imagine the shock on this guys face when someone tells him he could have easily drilled the hole slightly bigger and tapped it

Teacher always said… You can take metal away but you can’t put it back on. You showed him!

And as someone who studied metallurgy for way too many years in college… Stuff like this is absolutely wonderful. Times when it’s a true lifesaver.

A few precautions would be taken into account if done professionally however. Because of the crystallization and structure of the steel after this is done. Most machine shops shouldn’t or wouldn’t do this unless it was Something non-structural or something for a friend.

Don’t get me wrong I’ve seen plenty of machinists and shops do stuff like this when they should have just remade the part. But never win any risks or dangerous failures were involved.
However it is somewhat common and accepted to use a plug made from the same steel into shrink fit it. Where the part is cooled in liquid nitrogen and the plug being heated. and if it’s the same alloy…
Then Once everything is normal and they do a bit of peening if needed… Heat treated all that can be considered and it really is a wonderful solution sometimes.

later on the alloy difference and everything can really give away the repair and isn’t honest.

Now if you really know what you’re doing, temperatures, annealing and reheat treating etc.… There are some shops good enough to do it. But it’s one of the most useful things I found for my own projects and things that aren’t as “important”.

The metal grain changes when you move away the grinder. Looks like there's a secret cut there.

This loop is so perfect that it's the only one I've ever seen where I can't tell where the cut is/were you started. Regardless of that, this is so amazing and cool that it is possible to do this.

That is an amazing loop, you can't see any cuts but I imagine you hid it in the flashing while you were welding
