Charley Crockett gives a damn fine rendition of Red Lane's "Blackjack County Chain." Here's the last of our Fort Collins vidjas shot at Cloverlick Banjo Shop.

I've realized that I don't actually hate country music, I've just been looking in all the wrong places. This guy is great.

God bless Charley Crockett and the other fringe country musicians who are revitalizing and saving the genre.

Charley is our modern day Johnny Cash. He tells the stories. He plays the riffs. He deserves the credit.

Something about Charley Crockett’s voice man, everything he sings is golden. Like dude don’t even have to try lol it’s so easy for him to be so good. One of my favorites for sure

I just saw ol Charlie at red rocks September 12, 2024…. The man will become a legend. Grateful to my cousin who invited me and flew me out from Houston. One of the best nights ever.

This guy gets better and better. Saw him opening for JD McPherson over here in Germany some years ago, just as good as JD himself. Incredible musician who really sticks out. Lyrics below, use these chords when playing along:

Capo on 1
Intro Am E E/G Am
Verses Am G Am / Am G E / Am G F E / Am G E E/G Am

[Intro]
Am E E/G Am

[Verse 1]
I was standin' beside the road in Blackjack County
Not knowing the sheriff paid a bounty
For men like me who didn't have a penny to their names
So he locked my leg to thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain

[Verse 2]
And all we had to eat was bread and water
And each day we had to build that road a mile and a quarter
A black snake whip would cut our backs if some poor fool complained
And you couldn't fight back wearin' thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain

[Verse 3]
And then one night when the sheriff was a-sleepin'
We gathered all around him slowly creepin'
Heaven help me to forget that night in the cold, cold rain
When we beat him to death with thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain

[Verse 4]
Now the whip marks have all healed and I am thankful
That there's nothing but these scars around my ankles
But most of all I'm glad no man will be a slave again
To a black snake whip and thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain
To a black snake whip and thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain
Blackjack County chain
Blackjack County chain

Please guys, don't roast me. I'm just a swiss dude who actually has no clue (yet) of country besides the stereotypes and cliches there are here. I discovered this channel by accident and good god, it opened a door for me that i thought would never be opened...ever. It feels so real and true to the roots of the music. Not like other things that i thought would be "country" You know. pickup trucks, women in daisy dukes, people line dancing and all the other prejudice. I freaking love this channel and discovered so many new styles of music! If more folks here would know about this - i dare to say - "new wave of country" they'd surely embrace and welcome it more! You gained a new subscriber and guy who wants to learn (and of course listen) more!!!!

I used to only like classic country like Sanford, Willie, Hank, but this man has a classic style that transcends time
