Charley Crockett "The Poplar Tree"
Written by: Charley Crockett & Dallas Burrow

Charley brought us to one of his favorite honky-tonks, Riley's Tavern to record a couple of videos. A son of Davy Crockett, Texas Native Charley Crockett is masterful at his craft for storytelling. With the amount of music he puts out, we deem him the Ludacris of Country music. Please enjoy our new CC video.

This is all anyone is asking for. True country with the simplest of styles.

I always appreciate the artists and their music on this channel- but man, it absolutely benefits a guy like Charlie to play in this format. There's something in the simplicity of it- just vocals and a 6-string really make the song pop (especially compared to the studio versions).

That goes for a lot of the artists on this channel/Gems- I'm surprised more artists in the genre don't release songs in this format on their albums- it seems like that's what most folks are looking for

Lyrics and chords below folks

Standard Tuning, Capo on 1

Verses C Am / C Am / C Am / F G / C Am / C Am / C Am / F G C
Interludes C Am C Am
Chorus F C / F C / F Am / F G C
Verse 4 C Am / C Am / C Am / F G C / Am
Outro C Am / C Am / C Am / F G C

[Verse 1]
I'm holding my head up
I'm not gonna cry
Or tell them that I need her
And that without her I would die
I'm not gonna argue
They won't listen to me
I'm just gonna stay right here
Under the poplar tree

[Interlude]

[Verse 2]
Let me tell you a story
It happened this way
It was born out of longing
In a man that's gone astray
I've been to the valley
In the shadow of death
I've crossed many rivers
Wearing a scar on my chest

[Chorus]
Can't outrun this heartache?
A man, he sure can try
I gave my all to that woman
Then she turned around and said goodbye

[Interlude]

[Verse 3]
I was in a high desert
Dell City was the town
That's when my luck turned south
This ol' boy started showin' out
He killed the clerk and a young girl
Who was only standin' there
He looked at me real peculiar
With the bullets flying through the air

[Chorus]
I lit out in a hurry
He went out in a hearse
Heartbroken and wanted
Couldn't tell you which one of 'em is worse

[Interlude]

[Verse 4]
He must've been real important
Cause his posse caught up to me
I was holding my head up
When they hung me from a poplar tree
Yes, they hung me from a poplar tree

[Outro]

A whole album with him and the cat that plays accordion on gold mine would be killer because that guy that plays with him can play a few different instruments seen him playing a keyboard and a trumpet at the same damn time in one of they gigs
