Sony RX100 Very 1st Look Stevehuffphoto.com

This is just a quick very 1st look at the new Sony RX100 compact - After a few hours with it I can say this is the coolest little compact I have come across in a long while.

We tried every setting there is definitely a technical glitch, more users are complaining of focusing issues. It was not only my hand which is more than two feet away from the lens but people shots were blurry as well. It would finally take a clear pic after about 5-6 indoor pics with excellent lighting with windows. For a one inch sensor this should be a none issue even at night. For the price of this camera this shouldn't be an issue at all.

I haven't really looked at competitor photos(G1X) because I was never interested in these types of cameras, but I checked out some RX100 pics and they were amazing. Low-light shots were very good and it looked pretty sharp wide-open. I still have my good old a55, so I'll have to think of a really good reason before spending $650 on one of these.

such a nice job did on this, shame they fell short with the F4.9 telephoto, if they could get around that it would be a perfect alternative to x10 etc... :)

Not sure why the S100 is spoken poorly of. Its a great camera in that it pioneered the ability to get higher quality pics in a compact P&S body. I think its extremely well built with functionality even the RX100 copied i.e. the control ring. The RX100 should be in a different league given its price point. I think these are both amazing products in their own right.

as always great review - look forward to your review on the NEX 6 as well as the new Sony RX1 - will it be able to outdo Leica :) - for sure in price but build quality. Also Sony has the new 16-50 and the 35mm 1.8 - would be nice to have you review those as well. So for a little bit more is it better to go with a NEX 6 or this - maybe not a fair comparison as this is really for the ultra portable user - so maybe nothing that can compare with this

The focusing of this camera is actually very good. You must have placed your hand too close to the lense. If you want 1cm close-up, you are looking at the wrong camera. Large sensor cameras don't do that.

@rsmorex To conclude my conversation with you I also noticed in the store that you claim I wasn't in for several hours and also claimed that the salesperson just knew how to work the til (which by the way he is a pro photographer) that the RX100 lacks 'focus priority' which means if you press the shutter button half way down it will lock the focus on your subject as with other cameras and are waiting for the "Focus Confirmation Beep" . For a $700 camera this should be a none issue.

Should I wait for the Panasonic Lumix Lx7? I am debating if I should get the Sony RX100 or the Lx7, what is your opinion? Lx7 has smaller sensor but 24mm lens… RX100 has more pixels, Lx7 has 10 Mpx… what do you think?

Personally I think the battery configuration is a real deal breaker. Because, I had Sony compacts before and the battery degraded like mad, and I needed 3 batteries to last me a day of shooting when I travel. So if the battery in that camera degrades, and you run out of juice halfway through the day of travelling and you dont have another camera, you are stuffed, unless you are prepared to spend a few hours in Starbucks charging the camera.

I played with the Sony RX100 for a few hours in the camera store today. Off the bat the focusing is terrible, even with center focusing on and even on manual. It just keeps seeking a target without locking just stick your hand out in front of the camera and it simply has difficulty focusing and locking.Top left has softness issues and the max f range is 4.9. The build quality is very, very good way better than Canon S100. Focusing is a MAJOR problem on Sony RX100. Too many sub menus as well.

1) Bokeh for portraits

2) Sports and Fast Moving Kids


My budget is £300 to £350.

I like it but i've never like Sony's menus... I also feel that if i wanted such a good canera i would use my DLSR, but i understand its about the size... Not conviced quite yet
