How the Titanic Was Discovered During a Secret Cold War Mission

Early in the morning of April 15, 1912, the world's largest ocean liner slipped beneath the icy waves of the North Atlantic, carrying 1,500 people to their graves. For decades, the shipwreck remained hidden - but how did they find the Titanic?

Treasure hunters searched for the ocean liner for years, hoping to find valuable items that sank with the Titanic. But in 1985, oceanographer Robert Ballard successfully found the Titanic on a scientific mission. Or, at least, that's what he told the press. The mission was "strictly scientific," one scientist told The New York Times in 1985. In fact, the search for the Titanic was actually a cover story for a secret Cold War mission.

One thing I love about the movie Titanic is how Camoron used the real footages of the wreck in the movie ❤️

Just imagine how James Cameron must have reacted to the news. He was probably furiously scribbling notes and thinking, "I'm gonna make a movie out of this. It'll have love and death and nudity. And one guy is gonna bounce off the propeller!"

I went to a section of my local museum that was dedicated to the titanic and they had a tank of water you could put your hand in to feel how cold the water was for the people there and it was just ice, ice cold and its crazy to believe some people actually survived floating around in the water

At the underwater sea connector factory (place now known as Subconn) that made parts for those underwater research machines, I worked there for an afterschool job, work study job, a full-time job for a summer, and for school breaks.

I was working there when the film Titanic (1997) was released and also when it won all those Academy Awards.

Speaking of underwater robotic submersibles: You should tell the Ballad of Boaty McBoatface.

I have been to one of the traveling exhibits of the Titanic, as well as the museum in Belfast. Very moving.

The thing that burns me is those that have seen the movie "Raise The Titanic" but haven't read the book. The movie and book have two things in common, first that the protagonist was Dirk Pitt and that the Titanic was raised, but nothing else. Characters were never mentioned and plot lines ignored. When the movie came out only one theater in town had the movie and they were charging 12.00 to see the movie. Since entrance fees for most movies back then was 3.00, no way in hell was I going to see the movie. Nearly 20 years later, with a Blockbuster gift card in hand, I saw the movie for free and I was very, very, relieved that I didn't spend the 12.00 to see it as I had read the book and found the movie to be trash.

It’s interesting to think that there are TWO Italian animated knockoff movies that both repeatedly refer to the “legend” of The Titanic, explicitly treating the story like a fairy tale. One even opens with a cartoon mouse saying, “Most people think thr Titanic was only a legend, but here’s the REAL story!”
(I can’t remember if this was the one with the rapping dog or the one where an octopus saved everybody)

I get treating the relics with respect and I really, really don't think they should be owned privately. But over a century later there are no "human remains". Brining up chunks of the ship, furnishings, and even personal effects are artifacts of history. It's not like digging up someone's coffin and stealing the wedding ring they were buried with.

Great video! I'd love to see one on the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald next, or of one of the type storms that sank it on the Great Lakes. Thanks! C'mon you can't pass up on the chance to reference Gordon Lightfoot!

"His name is James Cameron! The bravest pioneer!"

James Cameron doesn't do what James Cameron does for James Cameron. James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is.. James Cameron.
